This isn't the Middle Ages. Mental illness has many explanations, but none of them involve punishment for sins. I was raised in a devout Christian home and have attended church since infancy, and never once heard "punishment for sins" given from the pulpit as an explanation for physical or psychological ailments.

I am a Christian and I have yet to ever say that people are being punished for their sins for the reason they face such hardships.
I don't know what reasons there are that God allows such bad things to happen, but I recognize that it isn't punishment.
I believe that is one of the main points of Job...that sin doesn't result in bad things to happen to you, just like if you're a good moral person, everything goes okay.
*EDIT*
Maybe you heard one person say this and lumped all Christians into the mix. Right now, that's the way it looks.

Kind of odd that divine punishment for sin can be controlled by medication, wouldn't you say?? Jesus made it very clear that infirmities people suffer are not the result of their sin nor their parents' sin. Of course venereal disease can be a result of sexual sin, brain damage can be the result of overdosing, and liver cirrhosis can be the result of drinking to much. But these are natural results of sin, not punishments inflicted directly by God. These are some of the reasons God has forbidden certain behaviors, to protect us from such natural outcomes.

I think of mental illnesses just like of other illnesses. The brain is an organ and can have a malfunction just like for example the liver or the kidneys. So, mental illness is no more punishment from God than other illnesses.

In the case of the man who called himself "legion" who had many spirits in him. These spirits being sent into the pigs by Christ. I would say that, that case could be described as schizophrenia. As for being a punishment for sin. When the Apostles asked if one of the blind men that was healed had sinned, or that his parents had sinned. He replied that the man was in that case for the beholding of the power and glory of God.

I am a Christian with anxiety disorder, and depression. No i do not think it is a punishment from God. It is a chemical imbalance in my brain.

I don't believe that in the least. I have a good friend whose son is schizophrenic. I also have a very religious friend who is bi-polar. I only feel compassion for them.

I think that's a bit whacky, they are probably not traditional Christians. Who knows who's teachings they are following.
