If your child went to school at all, even daycare, during the school year be sure to get as many names and numbers from parents and try to make a play date at least once a week or more. Try the park, chuck e cheese (can be pricey though), rec centers, waterslides, gymnastics, etc. Are there any neighborhood kids? Have them over for play time. Try your local city recrecreation department, they may have lots of activites you don't even know about.

You've gotten some good answers already...check out your community or park district programs for something that will spark your 5 year old's interest. Swim lessons are great but not sure how much interaction he/she will get but for sure, lots of fun. Good old park play is great or a tumbling class. Our community offers programs around bugs, arts/crafts, water play, sports, cooking for kids, language, etc. You might want to check out summer programs at your library. There's something out there for your youngster. Happy summer!

Children need these skills for life...if a child never learns empathy for example it cannot recognise some elses emotional needs in later life. It is important that these social/emotional skills are developed from an early age.

the ymca usually has fun activities for kids. Sports teams...gymnastics if shes a girl (though boys have fun with this too..its just jumping around really). Going to the park or putting him in daycare part time would be good and get him ready for school.

Check at your school for a summer rec program. Our school offers a free summer program with swimming, crafts, etc, and uses a summer camp atmosphere, with counselors, and field trips. It is a GREAT experience for the kids to get to know the teens in our school, and creates great relationships between the kids.

Look in to Day camps in your area. They ussually offer many activites and some even have a few field trips like to amusement parks and the like. Sports teams are also a good idea.

organized sports are not good for social development for 5 year olds. it's an unnatural situation managed by grownups, with goals set by grownups.
what's good is getting your child together with other kids to play in your house, yard, park.

Swim lessons, or some other sport. There are also a variety of Vacation Bible school sessions at churches, or a day camp.

I enrolled my daughter into a cheerleading class during the winter/spring. It really helped her overcome how shy she was. Now we are excited to do the summer session.
