Do not take a fanny pack, all you are doing it telling the pickpockets where your money is. In fact they are quite good at cutting them off of you and getting away. Wow I can't believe someone actually told you that (plus you look like a dork wearing one).
Never carry large sums of cash, you are just asking for it to be taken from you. Travelers checks are ok, but they are also a pain in the backside to use. You also get killed in the exchange rate when cashing them (which you have to do since they are in US dollars). The best way to take money is with a debit card like Visa Buxx. This way your parents can just add money to it on-line. They can do so 24/7, they can also go on line and check how much is there so they can stay ahead of your needs. However the very best way is your standard bank ATM card. There are banks everywhere and you can just get whatever cash you need every few days. The best part of that is you get the correct exchange rate and only are charged whatever your bank charges to get money (if it's the same symbol on the back of the card). I got 800 Pounds in London this year and was only charged $4.50 total to do so. Like I said, I also got the correct exchange rate too. Instead of the 10% less money changers charge.

Traveler's checks are the best way to carry money when traveling. But, American Express traveler's checks are the best because if you lose them or they are stolen, American Express will replace them immediately at no cost to you. As far as how much money should you bring with you--that depends upon costs of the items in question that you wish to purchase. Go online and do some research to find approximate costs of entertainment, eating out complete with buying alcoholic drinks. That would give you an insight into an approximate amount that you would need and then multiply these total costs x 10 plus extra $$ for souvenirs.

I am not sure on the money part, but they say take a fanny pack. That is supose to make theft harder. I would say take at least $400-$1000. That depends on a few factors such as how much you eat, where you eat, what type of alcohol you drink, and what you may buy. You may check prices before you go. Go to Rick Steves website at www.ricksteves.com
I hope that this helps! Have fun!

Take half in checks, half in cash. Spend the cash first and try not to spend the checks if you absolutely have to.
To have an idea of how much to take, multiply your current expenses and times them by 3, because everything is tripled basically in Europe.
example: $4 times 3= $12

I usually carry about $100usd and about the same in travelers checks (for emergency use or if you get pick pocketed). But for the most part I use my debit card to withdraw funds as I need them. If you do not have one get a prepaid one to use while you are in Italy.
