i've always wondered... when i was thirsty and desperate, i've tried drinking my own saliva. this however (=P) was veeery ineffective. why? why can't i also spit til i've filled half a cup and then quench my thirst? is it something as simple as not enough saliva?

Well if you were in a desperate situation and becoming dehydrated it would not help any. The saliva is fluid you already have so swallowing it wouldn't add any. But if you were dehydrated your mouth probably wouldn't produce much saliva because it would ration it for more important functions for blood and organs.

saliva is suppose to stay in your mouth silly...its not suppose to be a thirst quencher. :P
Saliva is suppose to keep the oral environment moist, and best of all protected, that's right protected. It can be very technical...trust me on this one. But there is such thing as not enough saliva. That's why they recommend you drink plenty of liquids, preferably water. Chewing gum also gets the salivary glands going..producing lots of saliva. Spit is good for ya :P

whoa! saliva only develops in your mouth when your mouth becomes dry so this is probably why you can't produce salvia in a cup and drink it and besides it would only make you more thrister if I'm not mistaking salvia has salt in it. lol

Recycling isn't helping :)

Through breathing and sweating your body dehydrates the most. Just swallowing saliva isn't helping much so you stay thirsty.
