I was wondering if you can be a deist but still hold some catholic beliefs. I believe obviously in every aspect of deism but i still am weary of renouncing my religion. I am sure that many people like me believe that the catholic church has made many mistakes in the past and will make many in the future. i disagree with their willingness to change and that has weighed in on my decision. I was just wondering if i could still hold some beliefs of my former religion while proclaiming myself a deist?

Deist, no.

Theist, yes.

A theist is one who believes in at least one divine being. Someone who believes there is only one God is a monotheist. Someone who believes in several gods is a polytheist.

Deist is not a synonym for theist. A deist rejects revelation or authority as a source of belief, believing in God purely on rational grounds. The deists of the 17th and 18th century generally viewed God as the original creator of the universe and its laws but rejected the concept of God’s continuing involvement in creation.

Have you discussed your misgivings with a priest or theologian?

With love in Christ.

You cannot serve two masters. You must, eventually, choose betweem deism and Catholicism.

You should probably learn a little more about the Catholic Church before making yours decision. While the Church develops over time, it does not "change".

The infallible Teachings of the Church on Faith and Morals are supposed to help us conform to God's Way; His Church's Way. The Church is not supposed to conform to our way. This is why the Church does not "change". So, the fact that the Church hasn't changed is a assett, not a liability.

Catholic people have made mistakes in the past. They are being made now. There will be mistakes made by Catholics in the future. You have to realize that, most of the reason we can know they made mistakes is because we can cite the various Doctrines that have been violated.

The Catholic Church is a hospital for sinners, not a house of saints. There are two things you can expect from devout Catholics. You can expect them to know their Church's teachings, and you can expect them to makes mistakes following that teaching. It's human (fallen) nature to make mistakes. God, on the other hand, is perfect - infallible. And so are His Church's Teachings on Faith and Morals.

Learn to differentiate between the Church's Infallible Teachings on Faith and Morals, and the manner in which individual Catholics fall short in measuring up to them on account of mankind's fallen nature.

No. The fundamental belife of Deism is that god is like a clock maker and has set the world into motion and other then creation does not take any steps or actions in the world. A teaching that is COMPLEATLY opposite that of the catholic church that says that god is present in our everyday lives acting and helping us along.

And where have you seen the churches willingness to change? The catholic church has been one of the slowest orginazations to change in the history of ever! Yes mistakes have been made but you have to understand that we are humans. WE DO THAT lol! No one is perfect but you should accept that they have made many many good things happen and have succeded in many great things.

Talk to a spiritual director who will just give you the facts from both sides. Make it clear that you dont want him/her to push you in any way and after you have spoken to the director make your decision.

God Bless and Good Luck

Well you really wouldn't be a deist if you think that there is a god that has anything to do with you now. You would probably fit into some kind of eclectic theist definition if you start pulling some of that in there.

If I were you I wouldn't get too wrapped up in the definition. I would figure out what you believe and try to define it later.

Deists have no idea what their God looks like. Catholics wrote the Nicene Creed.

Huge difference.

Huge.

Nothing wrong with following the traditions as long as you recognize they are man made symbols. There's nothing wrong with that, but if you believe the church is of God that's not Deism.

At least it is a start, but he cannot receive the sacraments of the Church until he is baptized. He may, of course, attend mass and other worship services.

Peace and blessings!
