As long as you're willing to put in the time, effort, *patience*, and money, a dog can be a very rewarding pet. If you want it to live happily with cats, your best options are to either adopt an adult dog from the shelter who is known to get along with cats, or be ready to bring up a puppy yourself and slowly introduce it to your cats.
A puppy is a Huge commitment though... You're looking at easily 3 hours of work a day, plus cleaning up any accidents and damage the puppy does. Then, there's the cost to get it's first shots and then get it neutered. After that, puppy classes can be quite expensive, and if you ever go away for the weekend, a dog won't use a litterbox like your cats... You'll have to pay for a stay at the kennel.
Please consider all the ups and downs. Call your vet too!
Good luck!

Ok, this can be tricky, but I am someone who currently owns four pets. My answer would be that you have to examine yourself honestly and objectively. Do your cats have regular vet care, flea care, etc? Do you care for them well? Can you handle a seventh animal financially and responsibly? If a friend of yours was doing the same thing, would you support them? If you can answer all these with a yes, consider it. I would just ask that you please do your research first. A little dog is a lot different than a cat and the breed can determine vast differences in tempermant and personality.

I am an animal lover too. I cannot turn my back on an animal that is sick, starving, or abandoned, and thats how I ended up with twelve cats, and 4 dogs. So I understand your position, and I think that as long as you have room in your house, your wallet, and your heart for another pet...go for it!
You are not crazy, you're just an animal lover!

As long as you have the room and the budget for the dog and the cats, I don't see anything wrong with it at all! Dogs and cats, in my opinion, provide two very different sorts of companionship. There's no reason you shouldn't enjoy both as long as you're able to care for them all properly.

Guess, I'm crazy too. I have six cats, two dogs and two birds and one is a parrot. It's all in how you bring them up. A puppy would be best so it can grow up with the kitties. All the best;^)

Well if you can handle 6 cats easily, then yeah, but I have a Pomeranian and he's a lot of work.... But go for it! ( you can try adopting a cat friendly dog from a shelter)

A little crazy maybe, but if you want one, get one! Plenty of great small dogs at the pound or petfinder.com.
