Is it possible for a car (front) windshield to shatter in a "million" pieces or does it only brake in bigger pieces? I'm not only talking about smaller accidents, i'm talking about from HUGE accidents or even bombings? I'm just trying to settle a bet with a friend.

Thanks

Normal circumstances are governed by safety glass and does not shatter.

The auto glass for windshields is designed to break into a zillion little pieces when hit with enough force. This is so that the large pieces are not a hazard to drivers involved in an accident.

I agree with the guy above, no accident is likely to shatter a window unless something massive hits it, but a bomb now from the explosion it may cause the window to warp and blowout from the pressure of the blast, in this case it is best to look at it from a stand point that it is like tempered glass you can pound and pound on it unless you hit one of the corners it may crack but it wont break but if you hit one of the corners it will shatter/explode into a uncountable number of pieces, if the plastic sheets are damaged in the process it could cause the glass to blowout.

Neither-Windshields are made of three pieces the outter, center is plastic and the inner this stops the glass from shattering in to a million pieces.

Larger chunks.
MOST windows in cars are tempered glass, because the break into small, non sharp crystals.
Most windshields are laminated glass (NOT tempered), because it's stronger. (Think of all the rocks and road debris that a windshield has to deal with).
Tempered glass is like a Vixen file(which is tempered), it's strong but brittle.
Laminated glass is really 2 panes of glass (UNtempered) "glued", or "laminated" with a piece of plastic between them.

They are made from laminated safety glass which does in fact shatter into millions of tiny pieces. The lamination is supposed keep it from coming completely apart.
