Jesus must increase, and John the Baptist must decrease. It all had to do with moving from the Old Testament thinking, to the New. Everything was about to change in just a few years.
Lu 16:16
“The law and the prophets were until John. Since that time the kingdom of God has been preached, and everyone is pressing into it."

John decreased and Christ increased. John's job was finished and God took him to heaven for a better life. John prepared the way of the Lord. Once Christ was baptised by John, John's ministry was finished. Christ was the One who John said was coming and John said that He was not worthy even to lace the shoes of Christ.

It stems from one of the OT 'messianic prophesies. That the Spirit of Elijah was to herald the messiah.
Malachi 4:5 "See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes."
Matthew 11:14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come
Matt 17:12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands."
Its usually not the 'death of john the baptist' that is seen as 'special' but rather him coming before 'jesus' and 'baptisming' him

John was killed because of a promise Herod made to his neice. He said that if she danced for him, he would give her anything she wanted. Her mother hated John and the daughter new it. So, she danced and then said she wanted John's head. Herod complied for he wouldn't be thought of as going back on his word. Herod actually liked John and talked with him.
Some of John's followers became Jesus' disciples also.

The message John was giving was to repent. Jesus was God's fine payer. If I kill some one I am going to prison and in the same way if I tell a lie ( 9th Commandment ) I am going to Hell. What John was saying is repent, turn from your sin, and trust in God's Savor ( Jesus)

Early Christian disputes about who was the real Christ -- the community was split. So John the Baptist had to be written to death.
