The AK 47 fires 7.62x39mm
The M1 Garand Fires .30-06

Both cartridges are .30 caliber however the .30-06 has larger case dimensions allowing for a lager powder charge

if you compare metric designations

The ak47 is 7.62 x 39mm (meaning the bullet is 7.62 mm (.30cal) in diameter and the cartridge is 39mm long)

The .30-06 is 7.62 x 63mm (.30 caliber with a 63mm long cartridge)

The standard AK-47 round was typically .310" or .311" in diameter, an about 123 grains' weight.
The standard military rounds for the 30-06 M1 Garand were .308" diameter and about 150 grains' weight.
The AK-47 is famous as an assault rifle, which means its "intermediate-size" cartridge is less powerful than a full-sized cartridge like the 30-06 but more powerful than the pistol rounds used in submachine guns.

Just look at the two bullets side by side to answer this question. The AK-47 is chambered for a 7.62x39 and the Garand for a .30-06 Springfield. The diameter is only commonality they have. Both shoot a 7.62 (.30 caliber) bullet.

.30-06 as loaded for military had a 172 grain bullet in 1926. The round was designated. Ball, caliber .30, M1.
In 1940 they adopted a flat base 150 grain bullet called, Ball, Caliber .30, M2.

The 7.62 x 39 is the smaller of the 2 with military loadings with a 123 grain spitzer bullet.

AK round is slightly larger in diameter. The M1 Garand fires a .308" .30 caliber slug and the AK-47 fires a .311" .30 caliberdiameter slug. They are not the same if you go beyond merely stating them as both .30 caliber (7.62).
