Good God, most of you are ill informed, some of you are racists, some of you have no idea what you are talking about, some of you have brought up things that are no longer accurate --------- and I'd think that some of you are still living in the 60's when China was truly screwed up.
I live here now and here it is in a nutshell.
After living here for almost a year, I have a pretty good grasp of what China is really like. I still have a lot to learn and I am sure my opinions will change with time, but the bottom line is this.
This is certainly no utopia and obviously China has a way to go before they will be on parity with the western style of living and freedom. However, in the last 20 years China has advanced so much, given their people more freedom, more say in their government then anytime in their 5,000 year history. That for the USA and other western powers to demand instant change for China is not looking at their past and measuring against their present, or their culture, their system or people and is selfish as hell.
Instant change will result in instability as there are huge political pressures and powerful people who want to live in the past that will throw all of China’s efforts in the trash and probably result in a system that’s as broken as Iraq. Obviously, the reality of instant change, as we’ve seen in the wake of Iraq and Afghanistan and their flimsy governments, the resulting China system could prove to be as counterproductive to the West’s interests, as well as the people interests in China as what is happening in the Middle East now.
Let China move at its own pace, it’s clear as day they are going in the right direction. We need to give China credit where credit is due and stop the China bashing. Look at the China reporting. There is always something negative to be said and rarely do we see stories of the positive directions that they are heading. We are bombarded with stories of human rights abuses in China, while not looking at our own such as Gitmo and all the secret prisons scattered around the world, to our overflowing penal system where that’s turned into big business and the criminal justice and political system that is feeding that.
As one political leader here in China put it when a USA politician demanded that Beijing clean up its human rights abuses, ‘we’ll talk about that after you clean up your own house.’
Most importantly is the personal lessons China has taught me. In the USA we have a habit of dwelling on the negative whereas China dwells on the positive. Every black cloud has a silver lining and no matter how bleak things may seem, there is almost always something good that comes from it. But to dwell on the negative, from personal in the individual sense to international as this country does is as counter productive as running away and not facing the issues and reasons that such destructive behavior exist.
Individually we should be better then that, as a country we must, but sadly, in both cases, the habits are part of our culture, ingrained in our psyche and hard to break.
There is enough ugliness in the world, why add to it.
Finally, the Chinese government doesn’t have me on a short leash. I’ve never been approached by any government official for any reason other then welcoming me to China and helping me with any problems I may have. I can say and do whatever I please, as long as I don’t break the laws or my work contract. I am free to travel anywhere I want in China at any time whatsoever. There are no travel permits required, no offices to visit, no officials to contact.
What you will hear often in the press are things that are no longer true about China. For instance, in 2003 I was not allowed to drive a car outside of any large city. The law was removed by the time I returned in 2004. Yet in 2006 I’ve seen current references to travel restrictions in China from western news. China is a country in transition and most of what you hear in the press and from our government is no longer applicable.
China’s changes are so rapid that to make declarative statements without doing the research often ends up with a lot of egg on the reporters face. The reporters saving grace is the protection of common held beliefs. Their disservice is to both China and humanity.

I have been living in China for almost two years. First, let me explain that I have travelled the world for work and lived in many different places. Second, I am a very driven optimist about almost everything. And third, I kept an open mind for a long time and made sure to read many books on this country while I was here so that I could properly understand it before passing judgement.
Now, having said all of that, I will tell anyone who is reading this that China truly, dearly, and thoroughly sucks in every possible and imaginable way. I live in a large city deep in the mainland, so I am not talking about fake China (i.e. Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong). I am talking about real China: the cities of pure Chinese.
I have written at length about all of the reasons (and there are MANY) that this is a truly horrible place to live and work many times, but to summarize in a few words: the people are amongst the worst you ll ever meet. Rude, dirty, simple, stupid, dishonest, greedy, selfish, and ignorant. The pollution is horrendous (that s good enough reason right there). Everything makes no sense and the inefficiency with which everything runs is insane. The food is good (not excellent) at very best and disgusting at worst, and most of the time it is closer to the latter. There is no culture here. None. Seriously. The cities are concrete and dirty and that s it.
I am here now only for the money. It is easy to save here, and that is the only reason to be here.
That s my two cents. I am very excited that my two year contract is almost finished here, and that I can move on with my life, never to look back.
Cheers,

CHINA SUCKS. And i ain't racist, my best friend in the whole world is Chinese, but China has such a large population , but none of them are wealthy or famous amongst the world, there are selfish ppl that follow what other ppl saying have no guts, have no mind of their own or opinion. With all the ppl in the world, and AMERICAS economy is still twice as big, with all that ppl, their military is failing still. Ppl have been saying that China could become the new superpower in 15 years, but guess what they've been saying that for 40 years and their economy is dropping like a hot tomato. If they were the new superpower than we would have unbelievable poverty and genocide, they not a country, they rely on America for everything, for buying their crappy products with sickening radiation that were stupid enough to buy. They Donny even sell those stuff in their own country!! Here's irony, I. Their own country is all american stuff!! They have no accomplishment

I haven't been to China, but I have read about the huge empty cities the government has built that nobody can afford. That sucks. Plus I read how they ignore patents and copy a lot of the cell phones, laptops and other technology that they were contracted to manufacture-that sucks. They pirate software, hardware, music. No pollution standards. It just sounds and (must) smells awful.

China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong absolutely suck. All they do is infect the world with their selfishness. The one child policy mixed with the xenophobia has created 1.4 billion of the most messed up people on the planet. China will never be a world superpower because all of its citizens are essentially children. The world is driven by American capitalism, and China will fail, just like the EU, because of its communism and socialism. Everyone has their hand out to the government. No one has any initiative. They are essentially robots. I say let the Arabs drop a dirty bomb on them. No one will miss the Chinese for a second!

China is a sucky nation. well yeah it is. it has progressed at such a booming rate...that the environment and the ecosystem has gone unstable. the world has to pay for the utterly stupid selfish deeds of the chinese. China as an economy might be very large and strong..but as a nation is stil weak. it lacks moral values, its like a big bully in south asia...temting all its weaker neighbours with its expansionist attitude. China needs to be thought a lesson. USA s oil sanctions against China is a welcome move.
