please forgive my spelling, but i have not read the bible, nor do i believe in god or jesus. i ask this question because I have to read this verse aloud at my grandmothers funeral service. I would like to practice reading it, but i dont have a bible.

please, save me the "you are a sinner" bit, I really don't care. I would just like to know what the whole verse says.

thank you and have a good day.

for those of you who wondered why I would read something I do not believe in, it is because I was asked to. my grandmother was a christain woman, though I am not. I am a wiccan -spare me your acusations please-. I am willing to do something beyond my beliefs because i love her, and know this is what she wanted.

Psalm 23
A psalm of David.
1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,

3 he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.

I think you mean v4, the word host (tsaba) is used as that which goes forth, like a host, organized army, or as in host of angles, of whole creation. He is the Lord of Hosts of all creation, angles and the armies of heaven. In verses 1-3 psalms lays out all of Israel and the angles and then in v4 says He is Lord of all these Hosts. And I think the rest of the chapter is better understood when you know the full meaning of this word. God bless.

Psalm 23 "The Lord is my Sheppard, I shall not want, He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteous, for His name sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, For thou art with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me, in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and love will follow me, all of the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."

I am sorry for your grandmother passing, and also sorry you feel the need to defend what you believe and ask people not to call you a "sinner". I would never do that personally.
Again sorry for your lose.

why would you read something in that context that you don't believe in?

and it's Psalm 23

what i meant was - I think it's okay to read all kinds of things but...why would you read something that is obviously about God (lord) in a context that would mean it would be looked at for hope and comfort when you don't believe it?

to your reply: I'm not accusing you of anything. I just wouldn't do something against my beliefs in that way. Although in this situation I don't disagree with the 23rd psalm even though I don't think it is about Jesus as Christians do so I would probably say it.

Will everyone there know you are not Christian? just curious...

"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want." - Ps 23:1 KJV

there's a lot nice verses found in the Bible, you can use in the funeral. example:

"We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord." - 2 Cor 5:8 KJV

"For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain." - Phil 1:21 KJV
