I have almost never had to make that decision. The kittens and their mama will let you know. I don't think that it's a good idea to separate them from their mother. Frankly, the mother cats I've had would have put up more of a fuss than you would want to deal with, I'm sure. You don't have to force this. You can offer them solid food at about four weeks and if they really aren't interested, wait a few days and try again. They may not all start to eat at exactly the same time. That's ok. The most important thing is to read their signs. The mama knows what her babies should do. Most importantly, I've seen kittens that went on solid food too soon, even mother's milk replacer, have serious digestive problems. It's not healthy to force them and there's no reason to do it. It could be dangerous. If you have serious concerns, take them to a vet.

This is a very natural thing and cats usually know best about such things. As long as they're all healthy and happy, just trust them and pay attention.

btw, there's a good KMS weaning food I've sometimes used for kittens that seemed thin or were not feeling well. The make a really good milk replacer, too, that you can use for the same reasons, usually on very young kittens. They should love either one. Otherwise a bit of good quality canned kitten food has worked best for me, when starting them out.

Good luck, have fun.

I usually start at 4 weeks
I usually take the mom awayfor the night and in teh morhing I give them moistened kitten food this should be teh cositency of soup.
Put their little noses in it so they can start to lapit up and then after 1/2 hour I let mom nurse them.
by letting them go the night they get hungry but they shouldn't dehydrate you can put a shallow bowl of water down as well for them.
any left over kitten food I let mom eat.
good luck
