That is a very good question.
All creatures are functions of instinct. Humans are motivated by natural urges more often than we realize.
We are still just a mix of conscious and instinctual thought. I believe animals have a certain level of consciousness (a soul), just as we have a certain level of primacy.

How do you know anything has a soul? I think a soul is something that lives on without the body. It is a belief, I would say you have to ask yourself that question according to your faith.

As far as the bond, they are absolutley capable, thinking and feeling individuals that can "know" a person.

Animals are great for us as humans, we need that unconditional love without an opinion and animals give it freely.

I can assure you that your cat is possessed with a fair bit of intelligence and genuine emotion. The bond you share is not instinct. Does he/she enjoy sitting on your lap or sleeping next to you? This isn't instinct. This is a sincere desire to be with the person he/she loves.

As for a soul, I can no more prove that your cat has one than prove that you or I have one, but I am convinced that your cat has a soul!

I honestly don't know. I know that studies have shown that dogs have the intelligence of a small child and I have no doubts that cats are equally as intelligent. Octopus can problem solve and many animals use tools. The real question is does intelligence equate soul. I don't know but pets are special. I hope that my pets who have passed on may be waiting for me alongside my family but I won't know until I get there.

Souls don't exist. Yes, it's brain function. You will notice that if you stop feeding a cat, the cat will eventually leave and go find someone else to live with. It's love, but it's certainly not unconditional. Cats are smart, and they will put their own survival first. The less intelligent the animal, the less concern with survival.

You and your cat are part of the circle of life. The concept of the Soul is human invention to separated the humans from the rest of the other animals.

There is no such thing as a soul as you might think. Do you mean soul as in the part of you that goes to heaven or hell if you die? Cause that's just a fairy tale and not real.

The actual definition of soul is the part of you that plays as an "aura" which defines who you really are. It is the energy that your body omitts.

And animals are living creatures, and they have energy too, so I assume they have souls as well.

Yes animals have souls and spirits..... If your cat can create thought on ways to trap a mouse or bird, hunt, it has a mind.
Animals sensory are very sensitive, that should tell you they have a spirit, soul.
And yes animals do go to heaven:)
Everything God created that's good, you will find in heaven.

Go back and read Genesis 1-3. How many animals did God breathe the breath of life into? God did not make animals in His image, only man. Animals do not have souls, they are not humans and they do not go to heaven or hell. They just cease to exist when they die.

I don't know if animals have souls. It is said they don't. But mindless brains is an oxymoron. If you have brains you have a mind. That mind may not be as sophisticated or as intelligent as ours but it is a mind none the less
