Monks can do different things like teach, some nurse, visit the sick, counsel the seeking, some have part-time "day jobs",do janitorial and housekeeping things around the temple and monastery ,write books and ,of course, beg for daily food (which spiritually helps those who share)in the morning adter religious services and meditation, An ideal is to become aware and meditative whatever one is doing that is in accordance with the 8 fold Path and the 5 Precepts.
