DON'T shave him. You may clip him down, however be forwarned that chows coats tend to come back in "differently" after being clipped (especially after being shaved). Sometimes it comes in very fine and flimsy, other times (as in my chows case after surgery) he "was" as a red chow with blond highlights....but after surgery half of him (where docs shaved) turned dirty water white with black tips....very coarse & oily (we just figured it added to his charm lol).

Your better off brushing him, taking him to a groomer that can bathe him and then they use souped up hair dryers at hurricaine force winds lol (just kid'n, but they are powerful) and that will also help blow out the old dead undercoat (the undercoat is what keeps heat in)

I am a proffessional groomer ( I went to the neew Yorkk School of Dg Grooming) and my suggestio is to have him Professionally groomed ask tehm to shave witha # 7 blade as any shorter and teh dog can get a sun burn.
I usually leave a little tip on the tail fo character but thats up to you.

Just shave his hair very short...people like to leave hair around their neck...I wouldn't if they get too hot the neck is the worst place to have a bundle of long hair. Basically shear him like a sheep!

I did not mean shave all the hair completely off...shave it shorter....not bald.
