Nope, old wives tale!! It is best to spay BEFORE she comes into heat!
Health-wise it is highly recommended to spay/neuter at 6 months of age. Spaying/Neutering can safely be done at 10 weeks, HOWEVER, it is not advised! It is best to wait until your dog is 6 months.
Also, once a female has had a heat cycle, the spay surgery gets about $50-$100 more expensive!! Hormones and anatomy are to thank :)
Do your baby a favor, have her spayed at 6 months.

It is definately best to spay before a season. The cancers and other problems that can occur with the reproductive system are related to the hormones released during heat, breeding, and whelping. So if you get the dog spayed BEFORE her first heat, you can almost entirely eliminate the risk of those cancers. Admittedly, the risk of those cancers is still low with an undesexed, unbred dog, but its still the best preventative measure around, and even a small risk is still a risk, and if you can make it smaller, even better. Aside from that, no matter how vigilant you are, when a male dog catches the scent of a female in heat, they can become very determined, and sneaky. So spaying before a heat also completely negates the risk of unwanted, unprepared puppies. And you will get more sleep too lol. My mother and i spent almost a week with no sleep when our great dane first came into heat years ago, she surprised us by having it early. My mother and i spent most nights chasing off male dogs, and trying to stop her from breaking down the back door trying to get out.

Hi-
Spaying is the healthiest thing you could ever do for your dog. Most hospitals say they may be spayed at 6 months, but there are a few out there that will do it sooner. I had both of my females (and all my female cats) spayed BEFORE their first heat cycle. This obliterates the chance of mammary(breast) and reproductive cancers later in their life. It also rules out the possibility of unwanted pregnancies and homeless puppies. Check out this website to get more information. Good luck and have fun!

Spaying before her first heat greatly decreases the chances of her getting mammary tumors later in life. As for the age - you'd have to talk to your vet - some like to spay at 6 months while others will do it younger. And yes, it's a very safe procedure, anesthetics are so much better nowadays that even sight hound owners don't have to worry.

No it is much better to spay them before their first heat. It reduces the risk of reproductive cancers even further than if you do it after the first heat (but even doing it after the first heat helps, just not as much). Don't wait for the first heat.
Many vets spay around 6 months, but humane societies regularly spay dogs as early as 8 weeks with no problems. Ask your vet - if he says earlier than 6 months is fine for your dog, that's OK.

the problem is that you have to wait 4-6weeks after their season to get them spayed and because you don't really know when she's due it might be better to and thats why people say to wait, so you know timelines etc. see my staffies had their 1st season between 5-7 month but my mongral had hers just after her 1st birthday, its so hard to predict. it will be very very akward having a boy in the house too as keeping them seperate for 3 weeks will be a chore but you can buy bi*ch spray which masks the odour a bit but i still wouldn't leave them together unsupervised as it doesn't always work with dogs that live together.
its a 50/50 situation! sorry i couldn't help more, good luck

HI! It is always best to have her sprayed before her first heat. This is usually done at 6 months old. some vet will do it earlier but you will have to check with your vet. A female dogs is much better off not ever having a heat. Less stress on her and for the owners too.

yes, spaying is best done before her first season. the reason being that an animal that is spayed before her first heat has a great chance of being mammary cancer free (pretty much100%) whereas the longer you wait the greater the chances of contracting it. she will also be 100% free of pyometra, which is a deadly uterine infection that she could possibly get on her first heat. also there is always that chance that a male dog can get to her during her first heat, and then you'd have a pregnant baby on your hands.

My girl is 6 months old and my vet said it is best to fix her BEFORE she has her first heat. Another plus about doing it this early also is that it significantly lessens the chance of her ever getting mammary cancer. I'm glad it's done and over with bcuz now I don't have to worry about periods.
