I have a mutt (American PitBull), and she just had eight puppies. The past few days the puppies have been feeding off their mom, but as of late (one day) the mom dog has not been feeding them. She keeps running away and doesnt stay in one spot. The newborn pups are a week old so im afraid they wont survive. At what age can you start feeding a newborn food (or formula milk), and water? Any information on the care of newborn puppies would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Mom might need some extra nutrition right now. Try some canned dog food and maybe mix in a lightly scrambled egg.

Holding your dog in there with the puppies can work but she could become aggressive to the puppies too.
If she isn't feeding them they will need special formula that you can get at Walmat (don't forget the puppies bottles while your there).
Take them to the vet to be checked out and for professional advise.

Take her to the vet and see if she has an infection or some other reason wy she doesn't want to feed them. This is not normal. The pups need to eat every 2 hours. MAKE her lay down and feed them. OR get some puppy formula from the pet store and feed them yourself with a bottle every 2 hours around the clock for the next 2 to 3 weeks.
When this is over.. SPAY her.

Dose your puppies with HARTZ wormer??? This person is an idiot. Not only is that drug for worms ineffective it is dangerous. You guys who breed with no knowledge really need to get a clue and stop using cheap routes to raising puppies. Take the dog to the vet, ask the vet about worming, Buy the wormer from the vet and give the doses when the vet tells you to. This other persons puppies lived through her assault with Hartz wormer but probably still have worms.. Yours could die. Step up to the plate and care for your pups the way you should. Irresponsible breeding is all fun until it starts costing you money and pups start dying. I get so sick of reading all these stories daily on here of people who don't have a dam clue.

You should be fine because puppies get special milk called colustrom from their mother and that makes them immune to certain diseases. At 25 days, they can be weaned from their mother so then they can lap up the formula but for now, feed them from a bottle. Here are some tips to help you: Always boil your water before using - allow time to cool. Burp your pups after feeding. A pup may have little bubbles by his mouth but there should not be milk running out of his mouth. When the bottle is held upside down the milk should drip out - NOT FLOW OUT in a stream - pups that get milk in their lungs will get pneumonia and more than likely die. Calorie intake needs to be adjusted according to growth of puppies. A general rule of thumb (unless someone has a better idea) is 1 CC per OZ. of body weight every 3 hours.

If the puppies are sleeping and not crying they are getting the right amount of attention. She does not have to stay in that bed constantly. Make sure that you check her for worms and that she is getting plenty of extra food. At this stage, one week, if you have to supplement her bag milk you will have to go to the pet supply store or vet's office and buy a product called "bitches" milk. It comes in a powdered form but to keep the pups healthy it will be necessary. I would watch her a little better -if the pups are not crying all the time and hunting for her they are getting plenty of food. You should not start feeding kibble soaked in milk for at least another 3 weeks or so. kathy

At a week old tehy need to be bottle fed you need toget puppy replacement formula you can get this at eh vets or in a petshop also Wal-marts carries it.
They ned tobe fed every 2-3 hours day and night ( 24/7) they also need to be stimulated to go to the bathroom you do this by taking a warm clotha nd rub around there privates this will make them pee and poop aldo their poop right now will be a runnie mess.
They can be started on Purina puupy food moistened like a soup with the formula and put their little noses in it to get tehm started. about evry other day you make it a litlle thicker bye the time they are 7-8 weeks old they should be eating solid food.
Also ask the vet at waht age he would suggest worming the pups.
if the mother won't nurse tehm get her spayed so this won't happen again.
At 5 weeks you cn offer teh pups a bowl of water byut they may not drink much until 6-7 weeks
Good luck if you have any problems get in touch with a vet at this age they can dehydrate and dye very quickly.

I know where you're coming from on this one. My rednose bulldog just had 11 herself a few weeks ago. You can help her out by getting some puppy formula from the vet or a pet store and feeding them. The mother may not be getting enough milk. To help with that, make sure she constantly has food and water in her dishes. Get somebody to help you care for her and them. Also, get some Hartz Wormer for dogs and puppies. It's over the counter and doesn't cost much. Give some to her. It won't hurt them, and they can be dosed @ 2,3,4,6 ,8 and 10 weeks.

If the mother dog does not want to feed her young ones, then you are responsible for them. They should be bottle fed , go to a pet store and they will inform you what to do, you do not want to starve them, do you.
