Some of the plastics used for food purposes (water or other foodstuffs) tend to break down after a while and release chemicals into the food or drink. That's why it's advised that you do not reuse them. I'd say if you want to reuse it for a short period of time you would be OK, but to use it for longer periods might make the chemicals in the plastic leach into your beverage.

I thought it meant that you could not return it for reuse (not the same as recycle). So I looked it up and everything I found said that you don't want to reuse a water bottle because of germs. Nothing to do with leaching of chemicals that I could find. I reuse them, just rinse out with hot soapy water. I have one bottle that I've had for over five years.

I think all of the above are true--they're saying now that if you reuse them or freeze them the chemicals get into the water and cause cancer--what doesn't these days? I know a lot of people who reuse them in work. I think microwave ovens are worse than that and everyone uses them!!

Yep, the plastic contains chemicals that decompose, don't want to drink those.
Somewhat related, you should never store water bottles in a cupboard that contains moth balls. The chemicals from the moth balls somehow leech through the plastic water bottle and make you ill. Fascinating.

Some of the bottles are made from recycled materials and if frozen or heated may break down somewhat. I usually rinse the bottle with a little bleach and use it anyway.

Unless you can sterilize the bottle without destroying it (good luck) there are millions of germs just waiting to get you sick.
It's not so much you refilling it once. It's people who refill the bottles over and over again. Everytime you sip or guzzle, your germs backwash into the bottle. Where do you think the germs go?

they dont want you do reuse it because of the germs and bactiria on all the old water and in the bottle the sides are full of bactiria

You are all worried the plastic will break down? what about plastic forks, spoons and knives? Gimme a break! Every bottle is reuseable, period!
