After searching a while for a good breeder, we finally adopted a 6 week old female yellow lab. We already love her to death! Anyways, our question is about her eyes. They're black now, but does that mean they'll be black as an adult? Or is black eyes the default eye color for young puppies, like blue is the default eye color for newborns?

Black eyes are seen in labs. Brown, hazel, and yellow are also seen. However, the AKC Breed Standards are that black, or yellow eyes give a harsh expression and are undesirable. And eye rims without pigment are a disqualification.
But, you are not planning to show her they are fine. They will probably not change; and stay black as an adult. Were the parents' eyes black?

Also, a puppy should not leave its mother before 9-12 weeks! So the breeder you found was not as responsible as you think.

Im not sure about going from darker to lighter. But my friend had a gorgeous boxer puppy that had beautiful blue eyes. Now that's its gotten older the color of its eyes changed to brown.

It'll be interesting to see if your puppy's eyes stay the same or change.

congradulations on your new pup

The eyes should stay teh dark brown. please don't get mad at me but you did not find a good breeder as a pup should not leave it's mom till 8 weeks. I hpe the parents were checked for hip displacia. Even AKC will not register a puppy if it's go to a noew home before 7 week.
The pup should start with it's shots at 6 weks and you should have it checked for worms as well.

They can be black as an adult, but I would only worry if they seem cloudy to you. This will generally happen when she gets older, a sign she is losing her sight. My dog has brownish eyes and she is fine.
