Your metabolism slows as you age, so you can eat the same as before and gain weight. Also often we slow down our activity rate, which means unless we alter our diet as well, we gain weight.
Eat less or exercise more. Exercise increases metabolic rates for a while after exercise too.

There are several reasons but mainly as we age our metabolism slows down and we must work harder to use up the same amount of calories as when we are younger. Likewise as our bodies age exercise can become more difficult because of joint pain and stiffness and other health issues.

Well I am 50 yrs old now and I am on a lot of medicine. I have had 9 back surgeries and it really limits me to doing a lot of exercise.

Because as you age your metabolism slows down. It starts in your 30's.
