We just adopted a (we think) 6-8 week old kitten from a friend who had a stray mother cat with a litter - we adopted one, who is sweet and friendly, has eaten fairly well since we got him (yesterday) however I'm concerned that he hasn't used the litter pan yet, I've put him in it and tried to help him with digging the litter, etc. but I haven't see any pee/poop yet - it's been almost 24 hours and I'm worried about it now.

I've read that you sometimes have to stimulate the mother cleaning them in order to have them go, but wondering if a kitten at 6-8 weeks old doesn't already do it on their own.

Thanks!

I would take to the vets first probalby nothing to worry about yet. but the kitten should get it's first set of shots before it looses the immunity it's gotten from teh mother that is if she had been vacinated. if the kitten ppos before take a stool sample as good chance it has worms.

My guess is that they are a bit older then you think they are. More like approaching six weeks, or a good five weeks old. First the mother cat. Her behavior with food suggests she was on her own for some time, and during that time found food very hard to get. So she is approaching each food opportunity as if it would be her last. For a water bowl, get a shallow glass baking pan. It will be harder to spill or move it. It doesn't take much of a water depth to provide a lot of water. It really seems like you are doing a great job of helping them all out. And that she is friendly to you indicates she once had a good home not that long ago. To socialize the kittens, it all involves handling them for short periods of time multiple times per day. Pick them up, let them climb over your hands, pet them, etc. Talk to them so they get used to people noises. A pet that goes from the head to the tail mimics how their mother grooms them.

Take me VERY seriously. I had a kitten and she had the same problem. You DO have to teach it how to use the bathroom. The mom cat usually licks it's poop hole to stimulate the poop reflex. I suggest a warm wash cloth in this area. But I'm telling you, stand back because my cat sprayed poop everywhere. It was very disgusting. I had to do it a few times but after that, Paulie was fine.

And listen to Scrubs_fan. Your cat may need a vet.

With a kitten that old, you are right about it being able to use the bathroom on its own. It could be a stress related issue. If you think the kitten is becoming bloated CALL A VET!! There could be a blockage issue..

take a damp wash cloth and GENTLY rub its lower belly area, where the intestines are. this is meant to stimulate it so it will go on its own. give him plenty of water, and don't let anyone near him when he is in the litter box. he also may be constipated, so you should talk to your vet if stimulating doesnt work. good luck with kitten!!

I have 4 cats and have been through numerous amounts of kittens (since 2 of my females got pregnant twice each) You might want to take the kitten to your vet and have him/her checked out and make sure he/her gets their booster shots and a full check up.

he/she might have anti-freez poison because that shuts their kidneys down. I sorry if that is the case. By the way take him/her to the vet.

Sorry to break it to you, but you have to teach it that!
