As a doctor who performs these examinations, I can tell you that you will do well. We give medications to make you comfortable and put you to sleep. We can burn, rip, tear, cut, and biopsy you without any discomfort because of the lack of nerves. However, you will feel uncomfortable with streching of the GI tract with insulflation with air. We put air in in order to examine all the walls of the colon, etc... The worst part of the exam is the preparation the night before.
Good luck....You will do fine...

I've had a colonoscopy before. You don't have to worry. Its not painful at all. They'll give you a anesthetic and you'll either be completely knocked out for the procedure, or you'll be numb where they are doing the procedure. You'll be wearing a hospital gown and your backside will be exposed, but it obviously has to be, because that is where they need to stick the tube. Hahaha You'll be laying on your side and the procedure will take about an hour, unless they find something they need to operate on - like a polyp in your colon. With the medical tools they use now, they can remove a growth right away as soon as they spot it. It usually wouldn't require the hassle of a second surgery. Anyway, so you don't have to worry about pain. You'll need to flush yourself out before the procedure though, and you won't be able to eat 24 hours before the surgery. Your hospital or doctor will either give you a little kit to flush out your intestines, or he'll recommend something over-the-counter from the store. One point to mention though: you might get quite a bit of gas after the surgery. This is normal because they pump some air into your intestines as part of the procedure. I hope this helps. Good luck!

A little info I think should be considered about this drug Versed ( Midazolam ) that is used for Sedation for many medical procedures..Sedation and General Anesthesia are not the same and quite a few people being given Sedation
think they are being given General Anesthesia!

There is simply no good or valid reason to ever purposely induce amnesia during a medical procedure. It is only a recent development in medical thinking that amnesia is somehow a "benefit" to the patient. On occasion some
some patients will remember a bad experience. Forgetting does not mean it did not happen!!
I feel that if people were aware of the effects of this drug they would Opt For Another Drug!
Erasing someones memory of what was done to them is wrong!!
In fact, many people who use Versed for " IV Sedation,Conscious Sedation" Twilight Sedation, during a procedure are Awake For The Entire Procedure but remember nothing, often Believing They Were "Out" the whole time.

Versed (Midazolam) is an amnestic. It is also commonly used for minor procedures like setting broken bones, colonoscopies, endoscopies, dental procedures like extractions, conscious sedation, twilight sleep, so that patients won't remember pain and discomfort.HOWEVER THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT THOSE SENSATIONS WILL NOT BE EXPERIENCED!!!!

A note from an anesthesiologist
I agree that using midazolam alone in painful situations is wrong. I've heard people getting colonoscopies and screaming, and maybe they remember, maybe they don't.

A note I got from someone on Yahoo Answers who did have a bad experience..This is very disconcerting... My sister said she heard me screaming from the waiting room but assumed it wasn't me. When we left we heard another female patient screaming. I did a lot of research since your post, thanks so much for the info.

Here is a note from a Dentist Who uses Versed
I've used Versed 1000+ times during oral surgery procedures and I've never had a complaint. It's a miracle drug because it is safe and it causes you to not remember an unpleasant experience. My answer to him is isn't it better to have not experienced the pain than to have forgot it. No wonder you have had no complaints they have no memory of the procedure.....

I feel that giving a drug for amnesia is cruel I would not want it done to me!

A strange development in medical thinking that it's okay for a patient to have
pain as long as they don't remember it and think they slept thru the procedure..

I am not sixteen, I am 40. But I had an endoscopy and a
colonscopy done last year. It was my first and last time.

I went to the hospital because I was having terrible pain
in my stomach and other areas, they had to do those tests
to find out what was wrong, but first they put in an IV, a
needle in your arm, cause they will be putting dye inside you
so when they take pictures an x ray they can see everything
inside.

They gave me morphine before the test for pain. I was
ok after that. The test well, it was awful. They insert a thick
tube into your bum, and fill it with fluid, that takes about
ten minutes or less. After they put the dye in with a needle.
The nurse told me I was going to feel a little pain. I was
tied down, so I couldn't move. Thank God. I would punch her
out if I could of moved. It hurt like hell, and I screamed my
head off. I am not telling you this to scare you. It does hurt
but the pain does not last long. Sometimes we have to
have tests that we don't want to have, but it is for the best.
Relax and remember the pain won't last long.

I've had two endoscopy's and I didn't think that they hurt. They were just uncomfortable, and most of the time you are somewhat sedated (at least with my doctor that did mine). I did one of my endoscopy's awake because they tried 7 times for an IV and were unable to get it. I gaged some on it, but it didn't really hurt. They numb your throat so you can't feel it too much which is suppose to help gaging. It helped me some, but I have a major gag reflex so it didn't help as much as it helps most people. When they took the biopsy of my throat it didn't hurt because it was numb. For me the IV was probably the worst part, but it wasn't bad at all considering what I've been through since I'm only 14. I don't remember much of the second endoscopy that I had because I was sedated for the procedure. Good luck!

My husband just had it done last week. (endoscopy) He did not remember a thing. And he said his throat was not even sore after. They gave him something in his IV to sedate him. He was actually disappointed he wasnt awake for the procedure. He did not remember a thing that happened. When I picked him up he felt nausious because of him having an empty stomach but did not remember a thing the Dr. had told us. He was still sleepy and slept for about 3 hours at home.
Ive known someone who has had a colonoscopy also, he did fine. You will be ok. The best part is that you will be sedated. : )

Hi....I'm waaaay over 14!, but believe me, I was just as scared! But what everyone here is telling you is the truth...the hardest part is the day and night before, getting your colon cleaned out and prepared. You won't feel anything at all during the procedures and most likely won't remember a thing. When you wake up, you'll be really surprised to find that it's all over and done with...really! So try to relax and not worry....you'll do just fine. And believe me, your biggest concern will be how hungry you are afterwards, but since you need to eat light, maybe you can get you mom to plan on stopping for a milkshake on the way home! Good luck!

They're going to give you anesthesia. You won't feel ANYTHING. I had an endoscopy when I was 17 years old. I never felt anything during or after and, to this day, haven't been able to remember any part of it because I was in La-La Land. I haven't had the colonoscopy, but I know several people who have them on a regular basis and they never complain.

You will not feel any pain. Both procedures are done under conscious sedation. You will be given a few different medications, one that will make you very sleepy and a pain medication so you will not feel any pain. You most likely won't even remember any of it.
It is a bit scary thinking about it but it really isn't bad.

They will give you a pain medication that will reduce pain and will make you feel relaxed and drowsy during the test. You may not remember much about the actual test.
