The resistance of a certain wire is 13 ohms. What would the resistance of the same wire be if it were five times as long?

So far you have two different answers, either one of which could be correct. Which one is correct in this case, depends on the exact definition of "five times as thick" in this context. Usually one thinks of wire as having a round cross section, and a wire "5 times as thick" would be five times the diameter, or 25 times the area. But a wire could be rectangular in section, and "five times as thick" could be in one dimension, for 5 times the area.

The cross-sectional area of a round wire that is five times as thick is 25 times as much.
25 parallel circuits of the same resistance would give one twenty-fifth of the resistance.
So 13/25 ohms.

The answer is 13/5 th ohms. Think of it as a parallel circuit with 5 wires, each as thick as the 13 ohm piece (that's a lot of resistance for wire!)

Use the laws of resistance ... that is

Series Resistance
Rt = R1 + R2 + .... Rn
The wire that is longer is like 5 wires in series, it is 5 times as high.

Parallel Resistance
1/Rt = 1/R1 + 1/R2 ..... 1/Rn
The wire that is thicker is like 5 parallel wires, it is 1/5 the resistance of one wire.
