This is probably something you made up. "Que tal" means "what's up" or "how's it going." Another way to ask how someone is: "Como estas?" I think you've mixed up the two expressions.

it can be a number of things estas = this, those, that, this one, these there you go .
Ok, "¿Qué tal?" means "how are you?" but informal and estas puts the questuion in a different phrase.
