In the U.S. we have had laws changed over the course of time. Prohibition being one, and that Slavery was outlawed in the 19th century. In other words, certain circumstances changed what laws need to be followed.

The same is true for the Bible. When Christ came, the old testament law was changed as we are now under the law of grace, rather than following the Mosaic laws for the sake of following the laws.

To state that we pick and choose which verses to follow and not to consider that certain verses were written prior to Christ's death and resurrection means that you do not understand the concept that events can shape which laws and verses apply to today.

As critics of the Bible, have you considered this factor of time and circumstances shaping our beliefs.

Or do you say that the US laws are irrelevant because we once allowed slavery and then later abolished it?

Sadly dear sister, Atheists are not willing to acknowledge the veracity of the Bible. It is the all time best seller. It is the only book that has made outlandish predictions only to be faithfully recorded hundreds and even thousands of years later. No other books have the volume of ancient manuscripts that the Bible does. (Check out the dead sea scrolls!) The New Testament alone has over 24,000 manuscripts to attest to its veracity. Evil men have tried to eradicate the Bible over the years but have never succeeded. God won't let them. Even today in China the commies are burning Bibles and putting people in prison for owning one. These poor atheists are to be pitied. They have no chance to wipe out God's divine word. Furthermore there is much corroboration of the Bible in secular history, Josephus, and Tacitus to name a few . Also, in spite of vain ,atheistic, Darwin believing , geologists, & archeologists and other so called sceintists making numerous attempts to discredit the Bible, there has never been a geological or archeological discovery disputing any fact, place or history in the Bible or of the earth's creation as recorded in the Bible. The Bible stands alone as the only absolute authority and the greatest literature in history. If only people, and most especially people who call themselves Christians , would read it !!!! God bless you for standing up for it.

First off - let's look at your examples. What "circumstances" suddenly changed to make slavery unacceptable? Are you saying it was acceptable before? This may be presumptuous of me, but I assume you'd answer no. So what changed? I suppose society had simply reached the conclusion that slavery was a despicable, barbaric practice, an affront to the unalienable natural rights of every human being. They had "seen the error of their ways." They had realized they were wrong all along.

Since you chose that as an analogy to make your point - suppose that Christianity itself may be wrong about a few things!

You say that atheists can't accuse you of cherry-picking which biblical texts you follow, because they don't understand that Christ's sacrifice has obviated the need to follow the old Mosaic Law. Well, then, why do Christian constantly cite OT texts to justify their positions on various issues?

Don't assume that atheists know nothing of the Bible or biblical exegesis. Don't assume that I disagree with you out of ignorance.

But even supposing that Christians stuck strictly with the NT - you're forgetting that atheists don't believe in the doctrine of vicarious atonement through Jesus. To me, replacing Mosaic Law with the "Good News" is simply replacing one superstition with another.

Exactly how does a man or woman assess while a textual content is supposed actually or metaphorically? Actually, why must any one suppose whatever from the Bible? It was once written by way of primitive guys who believed that the Earth was once flat and blanketed by way of a colossal forged dome referred to as the firmament. The Bible is only a number of devout propaganda, myths and experiences -- a few of which could have happened. The major characters -- Yahweh, Adam, Eve, Moses, Noah, Abraham, and Jesus -- are legendary, with out a dependable proof to help the reality in their life.

Actually, Jesus never changed a thing. He was a Torah observant jew according to the bible. He made a common rabbinical statement of his time, which was "fulfill the law" and it meant " to give a fuller understanding of" a portion of the Torah.
Since then, it's been twisted to mean other things, but Matthew clearly states that those who are "lawLESS" (without the Torah) will not go to heaven.

U.S. Law is valid, of course. however, the god of the jews said, "I am God. I do not change". This would then mean that the 613 commandments of the jewish god are still in effect today.
Considering that the jewish god is quoted as having said (after EVERY ONE of the laws) " these will be an EVERLASTING covenant throughout ALL your generations", I'd have to agree.

And who decides which verses apply to today?

Eating pork is allowed, homosexuality isn't. Who decides that? Why not decide that eating pork is bad, and homosexuality is okay?

Once you start picking and choosing from the state laws, you may just as well not follow any of them. The current state laws are very simple to understand, and when you start picking and choosing from them, you will be punished.

The Bible vs. US laws should have nothing to do with each other. This is NOT a theocracy. I acknowledge nothing about your illogical omnipotent creator being when you foist your views on others as if it's the sole "truth".

So, what you are saying is that the perfect, all-knowing god screwed up prior to killing his son so he repealed all the laws on the books? Now, THAT makes sense.

So what you are saying is that it really isn't the word of God? I mean the word of God wouldn't change. Yeah, I don't have a problem with that at all.
