It's summer. Go to Jones Beach. Check out the surf, then in the evening catch a show at the Jones Beach Theater.

People of all walks of life hang out in Greenwich Village at this time of the year. You could check out Washington Square Park. Otherwise, Central Park, Lower Manhattan. (Ellis & Liberty Island)

first decide what your interests are and that can lead you to which spots you want to visit. There is so much to do...there is no way to list it. Go to the visitors bureau and they will give you city guides and maps and can tell you how to get there....TAKE THE SUBWAY!
