Which was basically meant to discuss things in a rational yet mature way of doing so instead of doing so in a way where everybody ends up ranting and raving and bashing one another which doesn't actually accomplish anything. Can we ever be able to do that on this section? Or will it be the same thing but a different day?

The only way that true respect and true dialogue can be maintained is that all parties should listen and not just hear one another . It is only natural that people are going to disagree with another person's opinion or philosophy so be open to these people and open your minds. No one is telling anyone that you have to agree with another person but have the maturity , courtesy, and decency that each person deserves so a rational dialogue may occur and perhaps all parties may learn a thing or too. At least respect the person enough to keep to yourself unless you have something to say that can be constructive to that person and the audience in general. I hate to see that all we are learning is to be better ranters and ravers instead of what we should be==rational human beings.

Tis the nature of the Beeeeaaassst! Ooooaaarggghhhheeeearrfgh...spitts fire!!Roar!

Hahahahaa!
Actually it seems to me that those of us here persistantly are really digging into the core of why human beings fight so we fight too sometimes because these things mean so much to us we may occassionally foreget what you are now reminding us of! Plus some inherintly piss each other off by the very nature of our beliefs. I am not saying it is a good thing or to accept it. Just understand it.

I think some just look for comic relief from the seriousness of it all. This is a very community minded section of Yahoo! I tend to just leave for a while while i think...and I may be wrong...that some stay and take their vacations at home. Which is fine. Of course there is always the village idiot(s)...and the Trolls under the bridge of every village I suppose.

I disagree that it does not accomplish anything though! It is venting! Venting in a safe ...well reasonably safe...well, less dangerous manner than if we were in person or just bottling it up for the big bang!

I appreciate your point though. We do have dips where the lack of intelligent conversations becomes a bit of a wasteland. Oh well.

Peace!

Well I disagree Diaogenes, I can chat if I want to. See, I am entering into conversation with you! Feel feel to edit a reply!
By the way I agree with you on the rest of your statement! This is the place to bring it on!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love a good joust...however...everything has limits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Redback, I am shocked.

Sounds like an Utopia and all Utopias experiments fail. In general the religious and non religious persons in this forum are good people but the extremist in both areas makes more noise.
I prefer to ignore the haters and go to the next question.

Ah, my beloved friend.. I remember the days when I tried to bring tolerance and respect here. What I got for it was stalking and reporting to the point where I had to leave for awhile.
I learned quickly to simply choose a side and stick to it.. I try not to insult, but I also don't go out of my way to promote tolerance any longer. I just answer or ask and let it go.
Answer: same thing, different day

Free form forums like this evolve to meet the needs of the users, even if it drives some away. That is why unomderated forums, like democracy, often go against the best needs of the public. They become transformed by the mob behavior of the masses.

Not unless they restructure it.

They need actual, live, moderators. The automated reporting system is abused too much.

Have you ever been to a site where they only had rational reasoned discussions about this? It's usually rants, to be honest. But you can find "certain people" and follow their questions to weed out the other stuff - if it bugs you.

Nope. Religion is a strong part of most people's lives and can get you loved or hated according to the religion or non religion you choose. There are too many strong emotions tied to religion to keep it totally calm and rational.

I'm afraid not because the trolls and abusive people do get kicked off, but they come right back as different identities. Then you're also going to have people who can't handle hearing a different viewpoint.

It was meant as a tool to increase Christianity's push for world domination. The fact that Atheists come here and counter the efforts of Christians is a thorn in Yahoos back side.

This is NOT a discussion forum. In fact, "chatting" is forbidden. When someone asks a question, each answerer has only one shot to make his point. The topic is the most contentious subject ever devised by man -- religion and this is the Internet, not civil society. This isn't a Bible study group, where everybody is prescreened to believe the same mythology. This is real life, in a democracy, where everyone is entitled to their own opinion. If you can't stand the heat, you're welcome to leave the kitchen.
