It's fine by me. Majority of people refer to me by my shortened name so it's far easier than expecting them to call me Kimberly.

EDIT:

By the way, for those who are annoyed, instead of scoffing and/or being rude about someone incorrectly using your name, try politely correcting them with, "If it's no trouble, I would prefer it if you used my full name." Don't correct intentionally or to be rude. Correct only if you truly do prefer to be called by your full name. Otherwise you look petty and immature.

My name's very hard to shorten - I can't actually think of any names based off of it - but when people I've know well for years have tried to, I've asked them to stop ... so I can only imagine how annoying someone I barely knew would be if they did.

Well, a friend of mine who I had only been acquainted with for only a 1 year and who I don't see often shorten my name out without asking. I had met her boyfriend well on line through his aim because she gave it to me, and we'd only spoken like 5 months and he too shorten out my name-I was kind of flabbergasted by this-but I it's all good. I love em.

Yes it does!! It drives me crazy, but I never want to make a big deal of it, so I just put up with it.

Biiiig mistake. One woman I have known for years called me by a shortening of my name the first time we met, even though I stated my full name when we were introduced and sh must be able to hear that no-one else calls me anything but my full name.

Now, after almost seven years, she still calls me by this shortening. It is so irritating, but of course now it is entirely too late to say anything about it.

If this is happening to you, tell the person now to call call you by your right name, or you'll be groaning inside for years to come!

Good luck :-)

It does annoy me.
For some reason it strikes me as fairly intimate, and when my close friends shorten my name, it feels like a term of endearment ... so, when a relative stranger hits me with it, I'm always taken aback. Doesn't happen very often though.

But, no you're not the only one who is annoyed by this phenomenon.

: )

It can be a little irritating. My name is Christina and for some reason some people have a tendency to shorten it to 'Chris', doesn't really bother me, but I have a twin brother who's name is Chris, just a little strange hearing someone call me that.

Yes and no. If I'm in a group of friends and everyone is calling me by my shortened name, than no. They probably figure that is what everyone calls me and they want to comfortable with and around me. If someone is doing it b/c the like me and want to be my friend, than I'm fine with it. If I can tell someone is doing it to be cheeky or appear "in the know" or what I'm all about, than I get a little annoyed.

Yes, I only let my good friends shorten my name and they usually don't since they know I prefer my full name. However, I just correct the person. If he/she persists, I figure out an odd way to shorten his/her name.

Sometimes I do that. However, if I sense that it is annoying someone, I will stop it immediately. I mostly do it to because I really like the person and want to be more friendly and less formal. You might want to politely let the offenders know that you prefer to be called by your full name.
