Neither. Nutro has had lots of recalls and expanded recalls in the recent melamine crisis. Until that clears up, there are only a handful of dog foods that haven't been affected that are considered premium. Some of those include: Canidae, Wellness, Nature's Recipe, Newman's Own Organic dog food, and I am sure there are others. Here is a site where you can see what has been on the recall list and you can see how the list has expanded and expanded which means though a company can say what is on the shelves is "safe", much of that "safe" food at a later date gets pulled from the shelves because it is later found to be tainted.

Vet offices often sell Vet diets from specific companies because they get kickbacks or the food company sponsored education or something, not necessarily because it is a safe or better food.

I fed my German Shepherd Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice and she did very well on it. Contrary to popular belief, Nutro still has some fillers (corn products) in it, but there is much less than in Science Diet, Eukanuba, or Iams. A really great dog food that has no fillers at all is Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul pet food. Wellness is another great brand, as is Solid Gold, California Natural, and Barking at the Moon. You may have to visit a specialty pet shop for these, because I don't think Petco carries them. Sure, they are more expensive than a generic store brand, but not too much more than the Science Diet you were already feeding them. Here's another thing I discovered: Royal Canin really isn't all that bad, and it's readily available in most large pet stores. You have to check the labels (some formulations contain more grains than others, and you really want to find a food where the first couple of ingredients are meat-based) but it's easier to get than most of the other brands I listed, and is better than Science Diet for sure. Hope this helps...

Is there a reason the puppy is on a vet diet? How old is the puppy?
Nutro is OK, it still has some by-products & fats (check the ingredients.) Puppy's NEED puppy food. The protein and ingredients are different. They need a higher protein.
You can also order dog food online. Nature’s Variety sells a food called Raw Instincts that is great. Also, Wellness sells a 95% meat canned food that can be added to kibble.
Here a list of Royal Canin Veterinary Diets: http://www.royalcanin.us/vetdiet/vetdietcanineprod.html It can also be ordered online; I am sure your vet can also order it.

Look into Canidae, Solid Gold, Wellness, Timberwolf Organics, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Life's Abundance, Innova..... All good brands. Excellent healthy ingredients. No corn, soy, wheat, or other grains. MUCH better than most foods your vet will recommend.

I wouldn't recommend either...How about Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Canidae, Premium Edge, Percise, Wellness, California Natural, Merrick, Fromm,,these are usually sold in most places. Feed & grain stores often have several of these.

Nutro Natural Choice is a good dog food with out any animal by products . This beats Purina Puppy Chow or Iams puppy food. You don't have to buy expensive foods, Just foods that start with a Meat and not ground yellow corn , they will be better for your poop dog, than those with GYCorn as first ingredient.I raise, rescue and foster puppies through geriatrics. The foods with corn as the main ingredient just make them poop big yellow stools.

I would use the brand diamond and get the puppy chow. That brand doesn't use any filler. it is all natural and has a great amount of protien. Go to their web site to read more. That is what I used for all my dogs and now they are on the lamb and rice adult dog formula.

They compare very well.. They both SUCK. Find a food that has 2 or less grains listed in the first 5 ingredients. If you are going to pay a premium price then get a 'premium food'. Learn to read labels and buy the best ou can. Forget about 'brand names' and what a food is called or how popular it is or what anyone else suggest. Read labels and make informed decisions. The very best diet would be raw feeding.
