If an organism is heterozygous, it has genes for both the dominant and for the recessive trait. Even though only the dominant trait is expressed in its body, the recessive trait can still be passed along to its offspring. That's why people with brown eyes (the dominant trait) can have children with blue eyes (the recessive trait).

The parent can be heterozygous for the condition and not show it but still pass the recessive allele on.
