I might be willing to accept people's beliefs if they thought of god as some sort of natural force, but to give it a gender and to make it seem like some sort of tyrant seems a little ridiculous to me.
Do people honestly, truly believe in this stuff?

People try to create God in their own image. Sometimes that is because they just can't wrap their minds around something so intangible. Other times it is an excuse to kill and oppress others. People have been doing it since the beginning of time, often personifying the forces of nature as well.

God does not have a gender and is not a tyrant. But God is a Person, or more correctly, three Divine Persons. A "natural force" could not send its Son to redeem mankind from the effects of sin. Also, nothing that is "natural" could have preceded the existence of the natural universe, and therefore have been responsible for its creation.

God is personified because we created God, out of our own imaginations, according to our own agenda. Ignorant Bronze Age men created an ignorant Bronze Age god. No surprise there, the deities always bear a suspicious resemblance to their creators. As the world changes, so do the gods.

God not really personified by there is the whole male sex thing. Why? You already know why. Because men were in charge of everything back then. Women couldn't be seen as anything other then servants of men. They needed to be kept in their place.
That's why the pagan belief in the godess was demonized. This isn't news to anyone.
