I work at this rehab place. Its like a group home. I get paid 8/hr. One of my good friends works here also. She is almost 8 months pregnant. We have a big inspection coming up on Mon., Tues., and next Tues. They want us to deep clean everything and i mean everything. My friend can't be around the chemicals and they don't care not one bit. They expect us to do so much and what we do i think we should get paid more than 8/hr. I wanna look for another job but im trying to stick it out until Jan when i go back to school. Im not telling them im going back to school because the last time they tried to stop my friend from going and when u ask to b parttime the get mad and still schedule us fulltime. They dont tell us nothing. The clients complain saying that we dont feed them enough on wkends and when i told the cook what we do she says that we are overfeeding them Most of them are supposed to be on watch for their weight. Should we sit and wait it out or continue looking for a new job. Help

We have reported this to the ones that are higher than us. They dont care. They are not the ones that have to stay at the group home for 8 strait hours with the clients and deal with their attitudes. The other reason y i took this job is because im going back into the health care field and u cant find another job in this town for that much. I would have to travel at least an hour to get that pay and its not worth it bcuz ill be putting that in gas. We had a medical scare here and no one knew about it until 2wks ago and i was putting my 3 month old son at risk of this airborne infection. I appreciate everyones opinon but u cant say anything bad about me and y im complaining unless u have had a job like this.

Now is the time to report these people to the state licensing board, which can be done anonymously. Not only is this exploitation, but it is putting your friend and her baby at risk.
I also have questions about the dietary department. If the clients are complaining about not having enough to eat, the failure to feed them enough is a reportable offense.
Get a job at Starbucks if you want better treatment and a better starting wage. You both need to get out of that hell-hole!

There are several points you make with which one has to address in your question.

1. The girl that is pregnant could very likely get a doctors note from her doctor to avoid chemicals, no biggie. Have her worry about that though.

2. Next you are worried about your $8/ hr pay? Did you start out at that pay? Did they tell you, that you would be making that amount? Are you union? My point is they told you the job you would be expected to do, and how much you would be paid right? They might have said conditions were better then they are but, anytime you can look for another job. Don't let this place hold you back. You got this job because you either needed the money or you just wanted a hobby, I would say the first is more like it.

Jobs are great things to have, and be upfront when you are looking for your new job, tell them you are going back to school and need part time and get them to help you as you help them fill a slot on their roster.

Jobs are everywhere, they might not make the same amount of money, but cutting something as simple as a soda at lunch and drinking water could save you a few dollars a day, and that difference of a few cents you lost from your current job.

Tough situation here. Let's see I worked in a similar environment when I was 18 I quit I couldn't handle the stress of it! Now at 29 I would have stayed and been the change. You need to stand up for what you believe in and be the change or cut and run that simple. Either fight for what you believe in or quit. The worst they can do is fire you then you can draw unemployment until you find the job that is right for you. And firing doesn't sound so bad based off what you say about the place. GOOD LUCK!!

I would like to say in health care there are many chores that are not covered in a job discription. the best way to discribe your position is to serve your pt needs. unfortunatly this is not always pleasant, but in the real world of health care. once a year all care facilities face that monster called "STATE INSPECTION OR JACO" if it is your intent to stay in this field, you will face this anxiety ridden yearly torture. It does consist of a great deal of face lifting of the enviorment containing the pt. Ideally this would be done on a daily basis and the yearly thing wouldn't be such an ordeal. But in the real world we put off doing today what we can do tomarrow, so like taking a test in school, we all prepare the night before. Now, what you need to consider is ...a group home job is not normally heavy duty physical work and the pay you mention is average for this kind of work, if you intend to return to school it would be in your best intrest to keep your current job until then...for future resumes.. you can list this as , experience. and staying with it looks good for your dependability and reliabilty, both good qualities when on job search. Every where you go there will be things like this to annoy you..but if you hang in, it generally cycles and over the year you will feel great...ok...then miserable....and it starts all over again....lol not a bad thing, we have all been there...As for your co-worker being pregnant...let that be her issue to deal with..Often in health care you don't feel appreciated, and your personal situations are not addressed..This is also the case in any employment. Remember your goal...work is a must..not a pleasure in most cases

good luck

Although the pay is not great, you are doing a great thing by working there.
You may even be able to make a difference with the residents there. And even with your friend, inspections are a big deal, and the chemicals may be harmful so wear a respirator. Your friend will more than likely be grateful that you helped her out by taking care of the cleaning.
Keep plugging away to the kitchen staff and maybe they will enhance their services.
It doesn't hurt to try.
Good luck to you both!

u could report this to someone. If the people running the place force a pregnant woman around dangerous chemicals, they're endangering the life of the baby. It also sounds like u need a pay raise. but i would try to find a job where u could get away from those bosses and find someplace where the conditions are better.

It takes a certain type of person to work in places like that. I don't think this is the right job for you. I suggest you look for a new job. When you find your new job make sure you put your two weeks notice in.

January is quite a way off yet - I'd look for another job. Doesn't sound like where you are is a good place to work.

Good luck.
