The Ruger MK II and III are both good guns, but I am still partial to the Browning Buckmark models and especially the Bullseye model. All guns above are semi-automatic. Smith and Wesson makes a nice Double Action10 shot revolver called the 617. But the Ruger Single Six is a nice Single Action .22lr.
I suggest you post another question and explain what activities you want to do... i.e. Camping, fishing, plinking, hunting, target practice, range...

I own a Walther P22. I picked up the rare pink one for my 10 year old daughter. She loves shooting it. The weapon is fairly accurate and so far has been extremely reliable. We have fired close to 1000 rounds through it and haven't had any stoppages or malfunctions. We mainly run Remington or CCI 22LR cartridges through the weapon. There is one slight draw back to the Walther P22. They have been known to get slide cracks when running high velocity ammo over an extended period of time. If you do purchase one, keep an eye out on the front part of the slide. That is where the cracking has occurred. I normally would never recommend a weapon that I know has had a catastrophic failure, but the Beretta 92F is a perfect example. Beretta had some slide failures. It turned out it wasn't the gun, but the ammo that was being run through it. I own an American and Italian Beretta 92F and have put thousands of rounds through both of them and neither of them have any signs of fatigue. As I mentioned earlier, I purchased the pink one for my daughter so we paid a considerable amount more for it. The average price in my area is under $350, which is reasonable. There is also a new Sig Sauer Mosquito on the market with is also a semi-auto 22LR. I have not had the pleasure of fireing one of them though. I do know that Sig makes quality products, so you should look into it. There are some early complaints about the trigger pull, so dry fire it before committing to buy. So, which 22 pistol do I recommend? I would go with the Walther P22 (in pink). Keep an eye on the slide and do not run ammo that is extremely high velocity (try to stay below or around 1000 fps).

Guys..Gals....are we forgetting all of the conversion kits there are out there for say a Beretta 92/96? Or a 1911? These kits allow you to use .22 lr in addition to the original parent cartridge. While I do have to agree with most that a Ruger Mk II is (In my opinion) the hands down best. I just think that time and money would be better served by getting a conversion kit for an exsisting handgun or picking up a handgun and conversion kit.

The Ruger MkII, MkI, and .22/45 are all pretty damn good. Ruger has the only .22 semi-auto pistol that has been around this long, and has attained a legendary status for accuracy and reliability. They can easily be built into a target pistol, without spending a bunch of money.

The ruger MKII is hands down the best for the money.
However, the Walther P22 is a scaled down version of their P99. The p22 is more fun because it loads, operates and fires (save for recoil of course) just like a real auto loading firearm.
I have put 4000 rounds through my P22 and have loved every minute with it without problem.
The sites on the P22 are comabt sites, and not target sites, so you really get that big gun feel.

Ruger MKII - I had one in a blued finish with the 10 inch barrel and loved it. Incredibly accurate with almost no misfeeds ever. I remember it costing around $300, but that was ten years ago.

Smith and Wesson 422 is a pretty good little gun. I have an older model, though, so I don't know how good they are since they changed the way they are made.

Ruger MK III, or Beretta U22 Neos. I've had great results from both.
