Hi I can use ANY advice, you may have that may help my problem. I installed Windows Vista Home Premium

my computer is a Gateway MX6433.
I upgraded my ram to 1GB
to see if this would correct the problem but still no

The computer will give me the
"Logging off"
"Shutting Down"
screen

The screen will go blank, yet still lite up.

All indicator lights are on, and I have to hold down the power button to shut down.

I entered safe mode to see if the computer would shut down properly and it "SHUT DOWN WITH NO PROBLEMS"

I spoke with someone on gateways customer service line, and they said all they could tell me is to keep booting the computer in safe mode and use it like that

This is a NEW computer purchased in JANUARY of this year. There is no reason I sould keep use SAFE MODE!

I have no other problems with Vista it runs fine
It sleeps, hibernates, locks, and restarts

but it wont shut down.. please help.

First make sure you have all available updates for Windows Vista.

If you are up to date and still have the problem, make sure you have your chipset and bios drivers updated. To do this go here: http://www.support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?ref=std&st=browse&platform=10022&model=10932&os=&type=&mfg=&bios=

First download and install the Motherboard Chipset drivers, located under the Motherboard Downloads section on that webpage. Once you have them installed try shutting down. NOTE: The motherboard chipset drivers are for Windows Vista 32-bit. Make sure you have 32-bit, not 64-bit.

If updating the chipset drivers does not resolve the issue, try downloading and installing the BIOS drivers, located on the same page under BIOS Downloads.

It is NOT gateways fault ( I cant believe I'm actually defending them, I guess hell froze over because I defended AOell and limewire today too). The issue is either a bad driver (unlikely) or bad software on your computer. You probably have a combo of red flag software like limewire, banzai buddy, bearshare, webshots, AOell, hotbar, webshots, free screensavers, smileys, incredimail, etc. Your issue is the result of a bad ap not ending poperly. Hit control alt delete and end task. It may take a while and you may get another window bout an ap not closing, just hit "end now"

Afterwards, run your antivirus/antispyware program.

I'm logging off for the day, wow, that's three known bad/poor products I've defended today.

that usually means that something isn't closing... weird though that it just stays lit up. Try to find any updates for the computer on Gateway's site, also make sure Windows update is fully updated.

See if that helps. also see if there's any spyware, adware, or virusses on it.

If this doesn't work, send it in to Gateway and tell them to fix it.

Good luck!

Hold the power button down until it shuts off. It may take up to 5 seconds.
