If you have to study to become an atheist it sounds like a religion.

So you want to be an Atheist... kewl! Only problem is I really don't feel there are any. Reading the Bible is not the total answer. You read and don't get answers. That's not strange at all. You can get allot of head knowledge studying different religions but really that's a waste of time. So what is your answer? Obviously you are looking for an identity. You want to give yourself to something but it has to be a quality item. Here is the "zinger"... you need a GOD experience. A one on one. If you ask for it ... it will happen. Be kewl dude ... hang in there!

You don't need to study all religions. If you have decided that there is no supreme being or spirit or God in the universe than there is no use studying religions to determine which God you want to reject. You have already rejected them all.
Your task as an atheist is to decide what is your code of values and from where do they arise. Those who believe in God usually have a set of rules, commandments, precepts, or otherwise to give them guidance. Where do yours therefore come from?
Additionally, if you believe there is no God then life has no meaning either which could be a depressing thought. If you are going to be an atheist, you should read the work of prominent atheists who have dealt with these questions, not the work of other religions.

Start by reading The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins. Then, hopefully, you'll realise you don't have to study all religions to be an Atheist.
Actually, Dawkins adresses this very issue in his book. Is there such a thing as a 'strong Atheist', i.e. one who *knows* there are no gods? His answer is no, since you can't conclusively prove the non-existence of a deity.
I am an Atheist because I think religion in general is man-made. When you compare religions I think it's striking how very similar they are, so I don't think any one of them is unique (or likely to be true). I think of these religious claims as extraordinary claims requiring extraordinary evidence: hence the burden of proof lies not with me, but with them.

If you want evidence for or against Christ, you need to read a compelling book by Lee Strobel called "A Case for Christ". Strobel set out to disproved once and for all the very existance of God. He is an investigative detective, has the skill and the skepticism it took to dig very deep into this "phenominom". He found many evidences and it would be in your very best interest to read the book to get this type of perspective on it. If you are truly studying to be an Athiest, you may find some good arguments in the book.

ian,
before you make a final decision think about this....
how were we created, if not by God?
what is our purpose on this earth, if not to have relationship with God?
is evolution the way this earth came into being? if so, why have we not seen anything continue to evolve the past couple thousand years?
how will everything end (what is the point to everything)?
i encourage you to research the answers to these questions and any others that you are prompted with as you search.
continue to read the bible as a resource along with other things as you seek out the truth. i will be praying for you! really!!
and remember, God (whether you believe in Him or not) believes in you and loves you. He just want to have a relationship with you. thats what He is all about. He loves you no matter what. He just wants you to love him back!! :)

You can't really conclude that there are no god or gods, only that the evidence for them is insufficient. There is the nagging "first cause" problem, i.e. "Why is there something rather than nothing?". The answer to that is "We don't know---it's a mystery." An atheist realizes that it's OK not to know the answer to questions like that, and that it's better to realize what you actually know and what you don't know, without resorting to fictitious answers.
A study of world religions is helpful only in the sense that everyone is an atheist about everyone else's religion, but only real atheists are atheistic about all religions.

There may not be a "God" that religion and the bible portray but there may be a God in a non-religious, scientific way. Some of the most interesting books on this subject surprisingly are by Religious scholars who did research on this matter, who came up with ironic conclusions one wouldn't expect. Back in the old times, religion was a way to get society civilized, and they had to create an image of "God" to keep people straight, but head to the library and search out some good books.

You don't have to read the bible to be an atheist. All that's required is that you don't believe in God.
Reading the bible is necessary if you want to be the kind of atheist who gets into endless pointless debates with religious people.
See if you can figure out from this post if I'm a believer or an atheist.

I don't know what you would study to become a good atheist. You are all ready one since you have read God's word to man. It is a love letter to us. What have you got to lose?. Think about it.I look at this beautiful world and wonder where I came from. Why am I here and where am I going? Where did this beautiful world come from? These are just my own personal thoughts. Good luck to you.

You don't have to study all the religions. Life is to short - there are something like 55 000 different cults, denominations and religions in the world.
Read up on agnosticism and answer the question is man a creation of a deity or are the different deities a creation of humans trying to make sense of the world?
