We were given the law BECAUSE of sin, not have control over sin.
Sin just is. When Adam and Eve broke the trust of God by rebelling and doing what they wanted to do - they weren't simply sinning by themselves nor for themselves.... by doing so they introduced sin into the WORLD.
Sin is like an all encompassing cloud. It affects the entirely of the world. It seeps into everything, you, me, the ground and the very air that we breathe. It saturated everything. There is no escape from it, except by the cleansing blood of Jesus.
God gave us the law to help us understand how to live with sin in our lives. Living by the commandments only helps us to understand who God is. Salvation is something different entirely.
Accepting that Christ died to save us brings healing from sin. We are still living in sin, and satan is still the ruler of this world, however we are set apart. We are free then to see our sin and the effects of it, and free to ask Jesus by His Spirit to help us overcome sin.
blessings :)

I agree with wefmeister...
*1 John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
So yes...sin is the breaking of law.

Sin is NOT the breaking of law ....technically speaking.
Sin is NOT an action.
Notice the book of Romans 5:21
"just as sin ruled as king . ."
Romans 6:14
"For sin must not be master over YOU. . ."
Sin is referred to as a King and a master ....an authority, that could have dominance over us.
Sin is a force within us, pushing us to do that which God disapproves.
Wrongful acts are the RESULT of sin ...not sin itself.
So, if you break the law, you have given in to that King and Master, called sin.

The bible says to know to do good and not do it is sin. Then you have the ten commandments that should cover all the rest.

No. Sin is a concept designed to short-circuit the individual's capacity for rational thought and substitute mind control. It is used to convince a perfectly good person that they are perfectly bad, and must therefore do everything they are told without developing knowledge, critical thinking skills, or the ability to listen and speak intelligently for themselves.

Yes.
But, there is a much more bigger question than that.
Why do we sin?
