I guess I've known it for the longest time, but it's being reaffirmed on this site, that so many folks who think of themselves as being Christian either cherry-pick the Bible or know next to nothing about what's in it. I've only read...and that at least a dozen times...the KJV...I came of age among primitive Baptists...and what's in there should cause a decent, 21th century human being to toss the Big Mac, strawberry shake, and fries he (or she) had for lunch. Gosh, there's some nasty stuff! No, thanks.

That's what happens when you spread a religion through a mixture of fear and coersion in the early days with all of the control of what to tell people being in the hands of the select few. Then, you have the translation of the original script left in the hands of those who wish to use it to, yet again, teach what they want others to learn, not what it was originally intended to be used for. That gets encouraged throughout the ages. One more reason why I refuse to believe anything other than what I know in my own heart and mind is right. I will not believe someone that something is "all right" if everything inside of me is against it, and I also will not believe that something is "evil" if I cannot see anything wrong with it (like homosexuality, for instance, which I don't object to even though I'm a hetero).

I think that's called 'throwing the baby out with the bathwater'. Basing your faith on some Bible stories is neither wise or expected. The Bible is an amazing book, but using it like it is a textbook of Christianity is going to just disappoint you.

I am shocked at how many Christians I know have never read the Bible in entirety, who do not know that the name of the Abrahamic god is represented as YHWH, who cannot list all 10 of the 10 commandments, etc... It quite regularly leaves me completely flabbergasted.

In general, atheists and agnostics know more about religion than the religious, because they usually arrive at their states of disbelief by educating themselves.

Nope, not news.
They pick what they like and ignore what they don't like or never even read.
