Online, I feel free to say what I want because it's anonymous. In real life, though, I try to hide my non belief because so many people I know are very fervant Christians. I don't want them to get upset, pray for me, or judge me for what I think. Is that a dishonest thing, or is it a more diplomatic way to be?

I am not secretive, but I very rarely feel the need to announce it. I don't go around telling people I don't believe in the tooth fairy and that I am not a dentist, so I don't see any reason to tell them I'm an atheist unless it is just a natural part of the conversation. It would be dishonest if you "pretended" to pray with them, or led them to believe you were Christian. I don't, however, see it as a problem if you allow it to be a non-issue.

I neither hide nor broadcast it. I think everyone's religious beliefs should be something kept private, not bellowed over a loud speaker.

Edit: I live in the Bible Belt, which also accounts for that reasoning, but if someone asks me what religion I am, I simply state that I'm an atheist and leave it at that.

I told my mom on a Sunday the 13th of May that I was finally atheists. Not in public I have yet to do so only come close is that I said I do not believe god is real it was to two people that didn't lash out or anything crazy. If they ask I will tell em if they get crazy about it and judgmental I will politely remind them they asked if they do not listen it's their problem.

i think that's crap. no, it's not diplomatic, it's being a wuss. who cares what they think. if they get upset or judge you, then they're not worth your time anyway.

i'm not saying run around screaming "i'm an atheist" at the top of your lungs, but there's no reason to actively try and hide it. what do you do if someone's all like "hey, where do you go to church?" i mean, do you just make something up so you can keep hiding your non-belief.

I was atheist for a long time and I let other dictate to me how they felt I should be and I was unhappy. I am not all against christians as people and I don't envy them or hate them but I would not want to change people away from their beliefs, I just want them to not be disrespectful of mine.

It depends on the person. Some people are very vocal about their beliefs while some others keep it hidden their whole lives.

Nope. Most people know I'm an atheist, and the ones who don't, well, it either never comes up or I don't know them well enough to talk about it.

I'm not.!! If someone were to ask I would tell them..It is really none of their business but if they ask..If you can't answer then you must be a person of little conviction...
