I usually opt for an experience. Theatre tickets, concert tickets. for my brother, i found out where he was going on his honeymoon and bought him a hot air balloon ride.

A gift card for any useful commodity like food, clothing, phone calls. Or, open a savings account for the person in the amount you would be spending for a gift. Money, for young people starting out, is the most appreciated of gifts...having been in that position years ago.

Buy something off the couple's registry. If they later decide they don't want it, they can take it back and get something else they'll need.
