Question

Tell me if I got this right. If someone were to ask me to pass them something, I would point to it (the object) and say "esto".

Just trying to use examples to better understand the proper usage of the word.

Yes, if it is nearby (next to you)

you say esto (masculine) or esta (feminine) = this

if it is further away (at the end of the table for example)

you say eso (masculine) or esa (feminine) = that

"Esto" is like using the word "this". So yea i guess it would be alright if you are using it to make sure you will pass the right thing and the object is nearby. if it is far away, its better to us "eso". Its kinda like english when you say "this" or "that". Esto is this, eso is that.

"esto" is when you are holding it..
i.e I'm not sure if you meant this or that, so i would say you mean "esto" while you have it
when your pointing at it
