In World War 1 most of the soldiers were volunteers. All the men in a village , for example, would volunteer together, or all the men in a particular factory. "Pals Battalions" were formed. In England "draft" was called conscription - U were sent "call up" papers, requiring U to join up, but I'm not sure that happened in WW1.Hope this helps.
