Living in an urban environment, but with areas where longer shots could be a necessity, a pistol caliber carbine would fill the bill. I know, all the chairborne commandos think a shotgun is best, but I shoot a LOT, and shoot competitively. For CQB , I know I could take care of business with a taurus pump in .45 long colt. The .45 colt is a pretty awesome cartridge out to around 150 yards.

Mossberg 500 12 ga., 18 1/2 " barrel, no question about it. Don't use a pistol grip unless everybody that may need it is comfortable with it AND practices with it. It will balance better, point more naturally and "kick" less with a regular stock (for women and older kids). . This shotgun is inexpensive, reliable and easily customized. For home defense (burglars and rapists) consider keeping it loaded with 2 3/4" #4 buckshot loads instead of 00 buck, they are just as effective at close range (ie. in the house) and less likely to over-penetrate and go through walls. The magazine holds one less round with 3" Mag shells and they kick A LOT more. Put about 100 practice rounds thru it for your own practice and break in purposes. Do keep some 00 buck and slug loads on hand too, they are good for viscous canines, mountain lions and/or bears. That should just about cover "one gun" home defense needs. By the way, this shotgun is easily kept "locked up" with a cable lock through the the ejection and loading ports if you feel the need.

I live in a semi-rural area, so I would not have to worry all that much about strays and over penetration destroying the neighborhood. I have my AR-15 in my closet safe with a pre-loaded 10rd mag of soft point .223 on top of the safe, just in case.

A 12 ga shotgun with a 18" to 20" barrell and #4 shot.
Stay away from assault type rifles, you don't want to be shooting .223 or 7.62 through the walls and all over your neighborhood.
If you're set on a handgun, any .357 or 40 will do. I think a nice stainless steel 6" revolver looks real intimidating and will cause home intruders to wet themselves and run away.

While I understand people's preference for shotguns, and my personal prejudice is toward the M1911, if I truly had to pick only one gun for any situation that might arise I'd have to choose an AK-47. The high magazine capacity, reasonable accuracy and stopping power at greater ranges than a shotgun, and utter reliability weigh heavily in its favor.
