Periods, sort of. This is one week in their total "heat" cycle. It is also when they are the most fertile. Keep your dog away from intact male dogs as she may get pregnant. Also keep her supervised when outside. male dogs are notorious for jumping fences when there is an in heat female around.
Please SPAY your animal. There are millions of dogs and puppies that are killed every year just because they can't find homes for them.
Spaying your dog will also help prevent many dangerous medical conditions such as a pyometra, a very dangerous and often fatal infection of the uterus, and the chance of your dog developing breast cancer is GREATLY decreased if your pet is spayed.
There are many low cost options available to you if finances are a concern. Check with your veterinarian or nearby animal shelter for your options.

Yes they do, though not as often. A simple fix is a doggie diaper and your favorite brand of mini-pads. Do not let her around male dogs at this time as this is when she may get pregnant.

if she is not fixed, she will definelely have a cycle, although it's not monthly, i think it's either quaterly or twice a year, and it lasts longer than humans. it is also the only time she can get pregnant, and the boys will smell he so if you don't want pups, keep her inside.
