Well as someone who uses GPS all the time at work, I have seen a lot of these units.

TomTom is UK based a dam good unit.. simple and easy to use but with a LOT of bells and whistles. Runs about $300 for the top end on eBay here in the US. I have one in my car and it works flawlessly..
Bad part: Bad to see in bright daylight.. typical LCD screen. Their customer service web page sucks (a technical term I am sure)

Garmin is a good unit

Magellan works good but is not as user friendly

Trimble.. not worth it yet.. maybe next year.

Mercedes Benz / Chrysler / Dodge / Jeep the Command system that comes with these cars is crap, sends the wrong way up one-way streets in to rivers etc. I would probably go for Tom Tom.

Best one on the marker would be a Tom Tom.

Unless you got good money to spend then i would advise a Alpine DVD/CD/MP3/Navigation system. Costs around £1500

Tom Toms are great. and if you get bored you can download alternative voices.

If you use a P2P network you can also get more countries, and speed camera locations for free

TomTom Plus should sort you out. It's currently about £200 from Halfords or Argos etc. It's the one I have and I dunno where I'd be without it: lost somewhere probably!
