More likely it is a defective alternator; this happens quite frequently (especially with rebuilt/refurbished alternators). I'd have the charging system checked; it's more than likely a simple fix (even if the alternator is bad). If the vehicle has a separate regulator, that, too, may be the cause of charging failure.

If the alternator burns out, there is a 175 amp fuse near the main fuse box under the hood, follow the cables from the alternator to it. It's probably blown.

If not, check all fuses as there should be two wires with 12volts on it while running.. if not, then a fuse has blown usually under the dash...

But my guess is the 175 amp fuse burnt out if the alternator shorted out (the regualtor is usually built inside the alternator or you should have gotten a new one when you got the alternaotr anyway)

Could be the voltage regulator. I did the same thing myself. Went out in the morning, battery was dead. Bought a new battery. Still wasn't charging. Bought an alternator, still wasn't charging. Then I looked in the repair manual that was right in the trunk of my car. Check the voltage regulator first. That's the least expensive part. But I've seen a rebuilt alternator be defective also right out of the box.

Yes, at the alt connector check for power: the ltgreen and red wire (fuse #11, 5amp) ,orange and ltblue (fuse#26, 30a), if the #26 is good and still no power the fuse link is bad..Good luck

Yes there is a fuse/link inline where the battery connects. If you can charge the battery with a plug in charger take it to the local store that will diagnose it for free (like Kragen or Auto Zone)

I'm not sure about the 2000 models, but the earlier ones if the "alt" light was burnt out they wouldn't charge.

you could go to auto zone or an auto parts place and ask.
