Maybe I wasn't clear, when I say 'up' or 'down' I mean is the U.S. visible or is it face down on the other side.

Man, I have quite a variety of responses, people saying different things. Could someone please reference a regulation so I can know, I would appreciate it greatly.

The U.S. is down, as in you can't see it, under the covers. And the U.S. is visible when the occupant is dead.
Though the was when I was in AF basic and it's can be different for different services. I know that the AF academy shows their seal I believe and so do the other service academies.

The U.S. is always visible. If standing at the foot of the bunk you should be able to view it as "U.S." As far as draping the deceased with it, that's something that has been going on for decades. All soldiers that are deceased are put into body bags. If none are available ponchos are used.

Per my drill sergeant in basic training the U.S. is down on your bunk. If it is used to cover a dead soldier the U.S. is up. So if you see the US on top of a body in the field you will know that it is a dead body. If you are sleeping in the field, usually on the ground, the US is always down. Yeah, we did that in the infantry.

The US is only visible when the soldier is deceased.

never heard of putting a blanket on a dead soldier, of course i was in the marines and we used ponchos the blood wouldnt soak through a poncho and was bigger and easier to carry, plus we never brought our blankets into the field

The US is up...so when you are at the foot of the bed, it is correct. Don't know anything about being deceased

I'd think the US would be up for all occasions, but maybe not for the deceased.

The US is up when the soldier is dead.
