It's sad, but, depending on the Church they have been receiving teachings, etc.,. from, they only learn what they are told and don't go beyond the boundaries they are given.
This kind of thing is a burden upon us all to see people limited by their Spiritual leaders of the Churches......
(Good Question by the way :) )

I dont feel the Holy Spirit has stopped. The Holy Spirit is leading me to truth in a situation now just as Christ said it would. He has convicted me of sins and conforted me in my time of need. So I think the Holy Spirit is still around today doing what he should be, we are just noy using it as we should be.
In Jesus Name
BTW its John 16:12-15

God reveals many things, however, this passage does not tell us that God will reveal anything contrary to scripture and the Bible does not us that God is consistent.
When there is an issue with what appears to be a conflict the conflict is in the minds of people and not in the reality of God.

Jesus frankly admitted that His own teaching was incomplete, and anticipated the further instruction of the church by the Holy Spirit. Today, the Holy Spirit continues to personally lead us into truth, but never in opposition to the Scripture. The Holy Spirit’s ministry is revealing Jesus to us. He has many different ways, and many different gifts He uses to accomplish this, but the purpose is always the same: to reveal Jesus.

Dear Midge
The Spirit lives in me... He shows me things every day. He speaks to me in everything, in every prayer and in every move I make.
I've invited Him to do this, and do not deny Him one iota.
Never in my walk have I ever said that His revelation stopped when the bible was compiled. Quite the contrary.
May I ask where you have heard this idea?
blessings :)
EDIT: wow, must be during times when the q's go by so fast I don't see them. thanks

Holy Spirit references your spiritual core or divine nature as opposed to your learned earthbound belief system. It is always available if we stop the chatter.

Gods Word says...You shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from His mouth.
What is the purpose of this questioning? There are things we know and things we know that we don't know. But God knows all and in time all things will be revealed. Sit tight missy.
