Jogging in place is alright but a regular jog outside is much better for you and efficient at burning calories. Any physical activity that causes you to sweat and breath harder will burn calories and help you get into shape. For instance running for an hour at a moderate pace burns about 600 calories, swimming can burn about 800 and hiking up a mountain can cause you to burn double the calories you would normally burn that day (assuming you do about a 6 hour hike). If you have a good healthy diet and are exercising regularly that is all that really matters.

Jogging i place for an hour burns 329 calories, and running outside, also burns 329 calories. So it's the same amount of calories

4 mph, about 100
5mph, about 250
6mph, about 400

that is on flat land. When you jog, your weight can also move the amount of calories burned. Estimated an extra 50 calories per 100 pounds more.
higher elevation 2ft.

4mph, about 200
5mph, about 400-450
6mph, about 600-700

Jogging outside is better for you because you get fresh air. Inside you get chemicalled air. Jogging outside does cause you to burn a little more because of the amount of elevation you go through. But, jogging inside in more comforting because you don't have to worry about temp, and you can watch tv while you jog. Outside, you can only listen to your mp3.

Jogging in place is very boring and doesn't burn alot of calories, but running outside is better. You will use more muscles and burn more calories and won't be as boring. I think you'll enjoy it more.

running in place is not going to provide even close to the same benefits as actually running outside, etc. and covering distance. the mechanics of the 2 exercises are not exactly the same so the amount of intensity can not be duplicated. running in place is not really a natural movement so it will not provide the same amount of actual exercise to the muscles being used as the range of motion of the muscles used is not exactly the same.

in terms of exercise the amount of calories burned during the training session will differ as running in place will not burn as many calories. the surface that running takes place on determines how "bad" it can be for the joints, etc. so running in place on a hard surface would be relatively the same as running on a hard road, etc. in terms of fat loss sprinting will provide greater results with less time spent exercising vs running. the greater the intensity that exercise is performed at the greater the increase in the resting metabolic rate after exercise. this is where real fat burning occurs, training that attempts to target fat loss during the actual exercise session is far less than optimum as the intensity of training is low which means do measurable increase in the metabolic rate after exercise. 15 minutes of sprinting will provide greater loss of fat will preserving more muscle mass than 1 hour of high intensity running.

well if your running outside especially up hill it tones your legs more and staying in one space you will eventually get bored and stop so i think that outside you will burn as you will not get as bored and wont give up.
