So you think your safe on a Cruise Ship. In 2005, pirates attempted to take over the cruise ship Seaborn Spirit off of the coact of Africa, close to Samilia. The pirates launched over 30 rocket grenades at the ship, many of them were duds. The only thing that saved this ship and it's people was a LRAD device. The LRDA device shots out a loud obnoxious sound, ear piercing sound.
So tell me, when are you planning your next cruise?

Only one huh. How about the one where they killed the man in the wheel chair and threw him over board. I only wanted to let people know what is coming to life. Like blowing up super tankers to block up the Suez cannel, took a year to clear that one

TINKERTOY, nobody said I was scared, I just wanted people to know that this still happens in this day in age. As I stated before, I am a licensed Captain and am very aware of my surroundings. The pirates are not a part of a the crew, they sneak on board. I have sailed quite extensively and am aware that a fast boat can out run me.
Can't I find one person on Yahoo answers that is surprised to find out about modern day pirates?

Apparently people don't understand that when these PIRATES board your ship, they kill men, women, and children. Smugglers have been doing it for centuries, they kill the passengers and use the boat to haul cocaine and marijuana, 1 haul then they sink the vessel, before it is made aware that the vessel and it's owners have disappeared

There are about a dozen cruise lines that serve US and foreign ports and every weekend, on Saturdays and Sundays mostly. all of those cruise lines launch 2 or 3 ships each. SO that's about 30 to 40 that go out every weekend. Now that does not include those cruises that go on odd days because they are for 12 or 15 daycruises and leave or come back on weekdays. So that's about 50 ships all over the world for just the cruise lines that do business in the US.

All of the cruise lines use ports well away from Somalia, the one place in the world where there are some idiots trying to play pirate. Cruises are very safe and I have felt that way on every one that I have been on, all 15+ of them. That one incident back in the 1970's where some terrorists took over a ship and dumped a man overboard is 30 some years ago and very isolated. You can bet your last dollar that cruise lines now know how to handle those type situation. On our last cruise, a couple weeks ago, the captain said they do background checks of sorts on people who book cruises. He would not give specifics but said they do take precautions. He was responding to a specific question from someone about security.

SO you can be scared if you want to, but I am not.

Cruise Ships are safe, they are prepared for Piracy issues, they have a extensive amorey at the ship with trained security personell. Most Ships are equipped with a LRAD device very preventative.

I just came back from a cruisetour last week and have another booked in August & Sept. No I am not afraid. With people shooting each other in schools, malls, work places, drunk drivers, tornado's, earth quakes & who knows what else if we were to worry about everything that could happen we would never leave the house or bring new life in this world. So you can either live your life the best you can or die early from stress.Your choice.
Mine is to enjoy it for as long as I can.

no matter what u do everyday you are putting yourself at risk for something bad that could possible happen too you.Hurricanes hit florida every year but yet people still live in florida.planes often crash but yet we still fly. There are deadly car accedents every minute but that doesnt stop us from driving. So even if there are pirates i will still go on cruise's and enjoy them no matter what risks possible come with taking them!

Only one incident (and a failed one at that) with thousands of cruise ship sailings daily. Sounds safe to me. Driving home from work is more dangerous.
