Only 100 years ago blood letting was common to rid the body of bad blood cells knowing good cells were also lost. Thinking was the good would recover. Now radiation burns the bad cells and chemo poisions them to death.....

You are talking about the treatment for cancer. With many cancers you have the choice of dying from the disease or undergoing radiation and chemotherapy. The treatment is often accompanied by grave risks, and indeed, some people die as a result of their therapy. But others recover and some are cured, leading long and productive lives. You are always informed of those risks before undergoing such treatment. Your cynicism is not completely rational.

To answer the question, scientists are proud of their accomplisments. Most are humble about it but there are noted egomaniacs in the scientific community. We suffer them with varying degrees of tolerance.
